Abstract:
The structural diversity of dwarf galaxies constitutes an important challenge to the standard cosmological galaxy formation models. Given the well-known positive correlation between surface stellar density and galaxy mass for ordinary low-mass galaxies. the discoveries of unusually compact dwarf stellar systems have stimulated an ongoing debate about their formation mechanisms. In this talk, I will present our recent progress and ongoing effort on observational studies of compact stellar systems in the Local Universe, with a focus on statistical analysis of classical compact ellipticals, star-forming compact dwarfs, and nuclear star clusters of galaxies.
