Abstract:
Meteors carry important and unique information about our interplanetary environment. Video observation is a powerful method for determining orbits and properties of meteoroids. Based on CMOS cameras with hardware GPS functionality, a system was developed with real-time meteor detection by labeling connected regions and Hough transformation, and calibration method that can calibrated the image on a per-meteor level and sub-pixel accuracy. This system is designed to be able to get heliocentric orbits of meteoroids using data from multiple stations automatically. During the 2021 Gemini meteor shower, our testing system detected ~1500 meteors for each of the 2 stations in one night, and 466 orbits were successfully obtained. the system in under constant improvement. In the future, we plan to build a meteor network covering a significant amount of area in China, by developing a highly automated system, user-friendly software, and working closely with educators and enthusiasts.
