XJTLU Student Symposium of Research-led Learning (SSRL)

As part of LIFE’s support for students with research-led learning, the Department hosts the Research-led Learning Symposium, providing a platform for students to showcase their projects.

In the contemporary era, the rapid evolution of knowledge necessitates the development of active and effective learning capabilities, i.e., lifelong learning and learning to learn, while the challenges the earth faces, require learning beyond the cognitive domain: we need holistic development, including ethical awareness, socio-emotional learning and global citizenship education. This dynamic landscape challenges the traditional education model that primarily focused on disseminating knowledge. In response to these challenges, we have embraced a progressive philosophy centered on “Cultivating research-led learning ability” among its students.

This innovative model encourages students to embark on their learning journeys by addressing problems or phenomena via research-based approaches. Students are inspired to take initiative in their educational advancement by searching, integrating and analysing relevant data and information. Ultimately, they are guided to proposing well-founded, evidence-informed explanations or solutions to address ‘real world’ issues. This methodology not only enhances students’ motivation and research skills but can also support attainment of the sustainable development goals (SDGs), agreed by the United Nations in September 2015, which presently guide the way towards worldwide sustainable development.

The concept of sustainable development is woven into this learning philosophy, as students are encouraged to consider the broader implications of their research and learning and to propose sustainable solutions for societies, economies and the environment.

To support and encourage XJTLU students in understanding the principles and applications of research-led learning (RLL), the Learning Institute for Future Excellence (LIFE) of the Academy of Future Education (AoFE) invites students to participate in XJTLU Research-led Learning Symposium every November. By sharing their own research-led learning experiences and achievements, students will contribute to fostering a research-led learning environment and to their own further development.
