LIF001 is a compulsory module for all Year One students, where they work in groups on a research-led learning project based on their interests. This module bolsters students’ teamwork, planning, effective communication and problem-solving capabilities. The research-led learning approach provides students with an experience different from their traditional secondary school classroom education. Ideally, their projects will be showcased at the end of the module.
University-level learning differs significantly from secondary education. School-level learning often emphasises individual study. However, the university environment, mirroring the real world, frequently requires collaboration to achieve common goals and optimise outcomes.
While secondary education focuses on specific disciplines such as mathematics and language studies, university and real-world endeavours often revolve around complex issues or projects. Moreover, traditional schooling typically follows a teacher-or textbook-driven approach, whereas higher education and real-world scenarios prioritise learner-driven exploration and engagement.
In preparation for university life, LIF001 bridges the educational paradigms of childhood and adulthood. Informed by cutting-edge research in education, development and neuroscience, LIF001 offers a comprehensive year-long curriculum to all Year One students.
This module equips students with essential skills and competencies necessary for success in higher education. Through project-based, interest-driven group work, students delve into topics that foster critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication — key components of the university experience.
In this journey, students are supported by experienced tutors who provide them with scholarly advice and guidance in challenges they may face in their first experiences with research-led learning. The tutors not only help students grow intellectually but as well-rounded individuals as well, in line with the Department’s overall philosophy.
Going forward, the Department will integrate its priority areas into the LIF001 module.
