Pen-Tung Sah Institute of Micro-Nano Science and Technology of Xiamen University has a profound history. In 1940, Professor Dr. Pen-Tung Sah, then University President, founded the Department of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering; In 1998, at the initiative of renowned alumni such as Dr. Ge Wenxun, the University restored the Department of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering and officially established the Pen-Tung Sah Research Center in Micro-electro-mechanical Systems in 2001; In 2010, the Research Center was reorganized as the Pen-Tung Sah Institute of Micro-Nano Science and Technology. In 2023, the Institute underwent an interdisciplinary reconstruction, focusing on the renaissance of the mechanical engineering discipline and entering a new stage of development.
The Institute offers first-class doctoral programs in Mechanical Engineering, Intelligent Instruments and Equipment, and a professional Master of Engineering program. Currently the Institute has more than 470 graduate students under the supervision of a first-class faculty body, including Fellow of Singapore Academy of Engineering , 2 Winner of Distinguished Young Scientists of NSFC and 5 other national level talents. Additionally, 51 faculty members have been awarded for various provincial and ministerial level talent programs. The Institute has established 2 state-level teaching platforms and 12 provincial and municipal level research laboratories,1 center for post-doctoral studies in mechanical engineering. The "Xiamen University Micro-nano Test Instrument Sharing Platform", specializing in microelectronics, sensors, energy device characterizations and nanofabrication, is the first of its kind in Fujian.
Following the reconstruction, the Institute will focus on Optoelectronics and Sensing Technology, Micro/nano Fabrication Technology and Equipment, Intelligent Manufacturing Technology and Equipment, Advanced Scientific Instruments, Micro-nano System Technology, aiming to create a research and development system from design to operational prototypes to integrated applications. The institute strives to meet critical national needs, to contribute its community with innovative solutions, and to build an internationally-recognized research pioneer in the field of micro-nano fabrication and intelligent manufacturing.
