On November 30, 20204, XJTLU hosted a unique social event - the TEDx Conference “Brave and Brilliant”, which included a series of TED talks focused on science and knowledge. With nearly 300 guests in attendance, the conference brought together scholars and artists from Suzhou and other cities, to share their insights and discoveries. The goal of the event was to inspire and educate the audience about the latest advancements and research in science, technology and art.
The University was represented by several researchers, including the Professor, Alan V. Kaluev, School of Science and Member of the European Academy, who delivered a TED talk discussing the importance of zebrafish in neuroscience research. Zebrafish have become a crucial and popular model organism in neuroscience research due to their genetic similarities to humans and their transparent embryos, which allow for easy observation of brain development. Professor Kaluev’s pioneering work in this area has contributed to a deeper understanding of brain function and disorders, potentially leading to breakthroughs in treatments for neurological conditions.
In his talk, Professor Kaluev also noted the value of zebrafish-based drug screens using artificial intelligence (AI) for neuroscience research and the potential of AI to revolutionize our understanding of the human brain and improve treatments for neurological disorders. Professor Kaluev’s talk sparked a lively discussion among the audience, with many expressing enthusiasm for the potential of zebrafish models and AI to advance neuroscience research. The TED talk underscored the importance of continued collaboration between AI experts and neuroscientists to unlock the full potential of this technology in advancing our understanding of the human brain and improving patient care and outcomes.
The event proved fruitful and supportive of XJTLU’s ambition to host these TED talks as a platform that fosters a culture of intellectual curiosity and critical thinking among students, faculty, and the wider community. It provides an excellent and creative means for engaging with cutting-edge scientific ideas and supports XJTLU’s strong commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration and serves as an inspiration for the next generation of scientists and innovators. In addition to the talks, the event provided opportunities for networking and discussion, allowing attendees to connect with speakers and fellow enthusiasts.
