On 16 November, 2024, the School of Science at XJTLU hosted its Laboratory Open Day, attracting a large number of students and parents. Through interesting interactive teaching sessions and engaging hands-on activities, participants gained deeper insights into the unique characteristics of the various disciplines offered by the School of Science.During the event, students visited laboratories in the exciting fields of Biology, Bioinformatics, Applied Chemistry, and Environmental Science. They actively engaged in a range of scientific experiments, including protein structure analysis, DNA gel electrophoresis, and soil sampling. These activities provided an immersive experience, showcasing the School’s vibrant academic atmosphere and its strong emphasis on research excellence.
Bioinformatics
During the Bioinformatics lab session, students explored protein structures and constructed phylogenetic trees using specialized software under the expert mentorship of teachers and got to experience the unique charm and innovation of computational biology.
Biological Sciences
During the Biological Sciences lab session, teachers guided students through a hands-on DNA gel electrophoresis experiment. From preparing the samples to interpreting the results, the session provided participants with a deeper understanding and appreciation of research in the field of DNA.
Environmental Science
During the Environmental Science lab session, students had the opportunity to engage in a hands-on field observation experience that helped highlight the importance of soil. Participants collected soil samples themselves and learned how to analyse and measure them, gaining a deeper understanding of the critical role soil plays in our ecosystems.
Chemistry
During the Chemistry lab session, teachers guided students through an experiment on the synthesis of acetylsalicylic acid (a common medication). This hands-on activity allowed students to explore the captivating world of chemistry and gain a deeper appreciation for its broad applications in everyday life.
Overall, this event provided students with a deeper understanding of the various disciplines and also sparked their interest in scientific research and discovery, offering valuable guidance for their future academic choices. Many students expressed that the Laboratory Open Day gave them a clearer understanding of the highly competitive programmes offered by the School of Science and left them eagerly looking forward to selecting them as part of their future university life.
