Meet SMP New Faculty Members!

05 Sep 2024

School of Mathematics and Physics at XJTLU is excited to welcome new faculty members,  Dr Changjian Xie, Dr Zhenyu Lu and Dr Bin Guan.

Dr Changjian Xie

Assistant Professor

Career

Dr Changjian Xie received his Doctor of Science degree from Soochow University in 2021. After graduation, he has been engaged in postdoctoral research and teaching at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and the National University of Singapore (NUS). In addition, he has visited the University of Macau and Penn State University, Park.

Module

This semester, the course Dr Changjian Xie will teach is MTH101 (Engineering Mathematics). The course focuses on complex functions and integral transforms, and the series solution of differential equations. This course plays an important role in future courses on mathematical physical methods, quantum mechanics, and mechanics of fluids and solids.

Research interest

Dr Changjian Xie's main research interests are modeling and computation in materials science. His research interests mainly involve electromagnetism, fluid mechanics, solid mechanics, and their interactions. In particular, he is interested in numerical methods and analysis of magnetic material models, microscopic molecular and spin dynamics modeling, and computational modeling and simulation of interface problems. He is currently interested in two main classes of interface problems, numerical methods and applications to topological optimization, which is essentially a region optimization problem with differential equation constraints, and numerical methods and applications to multiphase problems, in particular moving contact line problems.

Currently, in addition to these, he is interested in machine learning for solving scientific computing problems, especially in materials science. He believes that the purpose of scientific computing is twofold, one is to be used to explain natural phenomena to discover the laws, and the other is to borrow ideas from nature to use scientific computing for productive life.

Wishes

''XJTLU is a highly international and diverse university. This is not unlike what I felt when I was a research fellow at NUS. Also the overall comfortable environment of SIP seems to make me feel that I am still at NUS, the only difference is my role. I believe that the academic atmosphere and resources at SIP will help me to further develop my research and teaching. '' Dr Changjian Xie says.

Dr Zhenyu Lu

Assistant Professor

Career

Dr Zhenyu Lu is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Financial and Actuarial Mathematics at the Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University. Dr Lu received his PhD degree in Finance from the University of Nottingham in 2024. He has passed all levels of the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Program and the Financial Risk Manager (FRM®) Certification.

Module

This semester, Dr Zhenyu Lu will be teaching MTH113 Introduction to Probability and Statistics. This module provides an elementary introduction to probability and statistics with applications. In a world of big data, statistical methods help us make sense of data, leading to intelligent judgments and more informed decisions.

Research interest

Dr Zhenyu Lu’s primary research fields are asset and derivatives pricing and applied financial econometrics. He is also interested in topics related to risk measurement, dependence modeling, expected returns, portfolio selection, and China’s financial markets.

Reason to join XJTLU

“As a research-led university, Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University offers a unique environment and a high degree of support for early-stage researchers to enrich their personal growth. Meanwhile, as a pioneer in future education, XJTLU, along with its continuously upgraded educational models, has the greatest potential to reshape and create new paradigms for higher education in China. To achieve this, I am happy to be able to make my contribution.”

Wishes

“I hope all students can find what they really like to do. With sustained actions, you will eventually reach your destination and embrace a brighter future. I am also looking forward to collaborating and communicating with my colleagues on cutting-edge finance issues.”

Dr Bin Guan

Teaching Fellow

Career

Hi, my name is Bin Guan. I have recently joined XJTLU as a teaching fellow in the Department of Foundational Mathematics. I completed my PhD in Mathematics at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York (CUNY), USA, in 2020, under the supervision of Professor Brooke Feigon. From 2020 to 2024, I was a postdoc in the Data Science Institute at Shandong University in China, working with Professor Jianya Liu.

Module

MTH013 CalculusMTH008 Multivariable CalculusIn my teaching, I focus on helping students understand the real-world problems that calculus can solve. With so many software tools available to do the calculations, it’s more important to know why and when to use calculus. I aim to make the concepts clear and show how calculus is useful in practical situations.

Research interest

My research interests are in number theory and representation theory. More specifically, my current research concerns central values of L-functions in higher rank and the relative trace formula.

Reason to join XJTLU

XJTLU offers a great environment for both students and faculty, with a strong focus on research, innovation, and collaboration with external institutions. As someone who values teaching and research, I believe XJTLU is the ideal place for me to grow and contribute.

Wishes

“I hope to inspire more students with my passion for mathematics and help them understand both the essence and beauty of the subject.”
