NIRSF Overview

The Nanjing University International Research Seed Fund (NIRSF) aims to nurture international research collaboration focusing on major scientific frontiers and areas of global needs.
The fund is committed to building high-level international joint research platforms that would participate in or host major international scientific projects and programs, conduct cutting-edge scientific research innovation and collaboration, and enhance the global engagement and academic influence of Nanjing University.

Background

As one of the oldest and most prestigious institutions of higher education in China, Nanjing University (NJU) has been dedicated to pursuing academic excellence for the betterment of the nation, the world and the humanity.

Nanjing University has continuously been expanding the breadth and depth of its research, excelling at both foundational and applied research. With a network of over 30 national laboratories and centers, Nanjing University provides an open and supportive research environment for over two thousand professors and researchers.

Hoping to further encourage researchers to collaborate with scholars around the world and work together on tackling global challenges, Nanjing University has released the NJU International Research Seed Fund (NIRSF).

Categories and Support Details

The NIRSF provides funding for two types of projects: program-based projects and platform-based projects.  Check below for more information about NIRSF’s categories and support details.
NJU International Research Seed Fund for Program-based Projects
  NIRSF for Program-based Projects
Objectives
Funding for program-based projects intends to promote the internationalization of disciplines and academic teams of NJU. It encourages the introduction of global partners to carry out scientific research collaboration programs and construct high-level research platforms such as international joint laboratories, research centers and joint scientific research bases based on substantive collaboration.
Funding and Duration
Program-based projects will receive a maximum funding amount of 200,000 RMB/year (equivalent to about $27,500 USD/year) and will receive funding for 1 or 2 years based on the project plan.
Eligibility Criteria
Each project will need to have a Principal Investigator (PI) from NJU, and a PI from each of the collaborating partners.
The PI from NJU must be a regular, full-time faculty at Nanjing University. The collaborating partners of program-based projects should be institutions such as departments, laboratories and research centers in world-class disciplinary fields.
NJU International Research Seed Fund for Platform-based Projects
  NIRSF for Platform-based Projects
Objectives
Funding for platform-based projects intends to enhance the internationalization level of existing joint research platforms and nurture high-level international collaboration platforms such as discipline innovation and talent introduction bases, foreign expert workshops and international joint laboratories.
Funding and Duration
Program-based projects will receive a maximum funding amount of 200,000 RMB/year (equivalent to about $27,500 USD/year) and will receive funding for 1 or 2 years based on the project plan. Platform-based projects will receive a maximum funding amount of 500,000 RMB/year  (equivalent to about $68,750 USD/year ) and will receive funding for 1 or 2 years  based on the project plan.
Eligibility Criteria
Each project will need to have a Principal Investigator (PI) from NJU, and a PI from each of the collaborating partners.
The PI from NJU must be a regular, full-time faculty at Nanjing University.
The collaborating partners of platform-based projects should be world-class universities and scientific research institutions that have a good foundation of collaborative research with NJU and have agreed to build a joint research platform.

Application Submission

For each applying project, the PI from NJU will be in charge of submitting the application. The completed application form and required supporting materials should be submitted to the International Affairs Office at NJU.

Budget Guidelines

  • Travel costs for inviting experts and scholars from collaborating partners to NJU for activities such as lecturing, researching and mentoring graduate students together.

  • Travel costs for sending NJU core faculty members and graduate students to collaborating partners for 1-3 months of academic research and exchange.

  • Costs for hosting or co-hosting international academic conferences, forums and seminars.

  • Costs for recruiting global experts and young talents with research potential.

  • Other costs associated with activities that can effectively enhance the level of scientific, cultural and people-to-people exchanges.

Reporting and Publications

Once the funded projects are completed, the PI from NJU will be required to submit a report within one month of the project completion date. Any publications (e.g., abstracts, articles) or dissemination of research (e.g., public presentations) arising from activities supported by the NIRSF should acknowledge financial assistance received from Nanjing University. Copies of publications or presentations or notification of presentations should be submitted to the International Affairs Office at NJU. The title for acknowledgment is “Nanjing University International Research Seed Fund, provided by Nanjing University.”
