NIFI Program Overview

Nanjing University is pleased to invite applications for its International Fellowship Initiative Program, which is designed to promote international academic exchange and research cooperation between Nanjing University and the rest of the world by supporting overseas outstanding scholars to visit Nanjing University on a short-term basis and conduct joint academic activities.

NJU International Fellowship for Distinguished Scholars
  NJU International Fellowship for Distinguished Scholars
Eligible Applicants:
  • Winners of the Nobel Prize, Turing Prize, Fields Medal, or other top international scientific and technological awards

  • Academicians in developed countries

  • Outstanding scholars with equivalent academic honors and achievements

  • To conduct joint academic activities at NJU for more than one week

We provide you with:
  • an honorarium of 1,600 yuan RMB/day (pretax)

  • a round-trip air ticket (business class) of up to 35,000 yuan RMB

  • Outstanding scholars with equivalent academic honors and achievements

  • free accommodation on campus or a subsidy based on an estimated cost of on-campus accommodation



NJU International Fellowship for Senior Scholars
  NJU International Fellowship for Senior Scholars
Eligible Applicants:
  • Outstanding scholars including associate professors and above in overseas universities or research institutions with internationally recognized important achievements

  • To conduct joint academic activities at NJU for more than two weeks

We provide you with:
  • a stipend of 1,000 yuan RMB/day (pretax) for professors or equivalent, 700 yuan RMB/day for associate professors or equivalent

  • a round-trip air ticket (economy class)

  • free accommodation on campus or a subsidy based on an estimated cost of on-campus accommodation



NJU International Fellowship for Young Scholars
  NJU International Fellowship for Young Scholars
Eligible Applicants:
  • Young scholars with or without assistant professorship in overseas universities or research institutions, with active innovative thinking and outstanding research potential

  • To conduct joint academic activities at NJU for more than one month

We provide you with:
  • a stipend of 500 yuan RMB/day (pretax) for an assistant professor, 300 yuan RMB/day for a scholar without an academic title

  • a round-trip air ticket (economy class)

  • free accommodation on campus or a subsidy based on an estimated cost of on-campus accommodation

Application Procedures

STEP 1

NIFI Call for Applications
NIFI is open to applications all year round, which are reviewed in batches. Applicants can check NJU official website or OSSC website (ossc.nju.edu.cn) for news on NIFI.

STEP 2
Applicants: Find a NIFI Host
Applicants should identify an appropriate NIFI Host working as a faculty member at NJU before making their application. Applicants can click “Find Your Host” to find contact information or fill in an online form for self-recommendation which will be distributed to relevant schools and departments.

STEP 3

NIFI Host: Guidance and Submission
The NIFI Host should guide applicants to prepare the application form and all materials required and be responsible for submitting the application to the International Affairs Office (IAO) at NJU via the International Scholars Affairs Service System.

STEP 4

Host Institution: Approval and Submission
NIFI host institutions should conduct preliminary review of all the applications and submit them to the IAO at NJU.

STEP 5

Eligibility Check
The IAO should conduct eligibility check of all the applications.

STEP 6

Mail/Panel Review
Applications should be reviewed within 3 months of submission.

STEP 7

Funding Decision
The results will be notified to NIFI host institutions once they are released.

STEP 8

Start Your NIFI Journey
NIFI implementation can commence according to the visit plan approved once the results are announced.

Self-Recommendation

Applicants can review the guidelines for more details on eligibility and submit self-recommendation through the link below. All online submissions for self-recommendation will be distributed to relevant schools and departments every month to help find an appropriate NIFI Host. If an eligible contact is interested, he/she will contact you to complete the rest of the application procedures.
Please notice that the self-recommendation submitted online is not a complete application.

Reporting and Publications

The NIFI Host will be required to submit a report to the IAO via the International Scholars Affairs Service System within one month of the completion date.
Any publications (e.g., abstracts, articles) or dissemination of research (e.g., public presentations) arising from activities supported by the NIFI should acknowledge financial assistance received from Nanjing University. Copies of publications or presentations or notification of presentations should be submitted to the IAO at NJU. The title for acknowledgment is “Nanjing University International Fellowship Initiative, provided by Nanjing University.”
