This program is open to international students and its main research areas include: pattern analysis and machine intelligence, data mining, machine learning, and natural computation, software engineering, network and distributed system, security and privacy, biomedical image processing, big data and cloud computing, database management system, computational intelligence, mobile computing, computer vision and image processing.

Our school has a team of highly qualified professors, many of whom hold doctorates from overseas universities. They are able to instruct international students in English.

Discipline Introduction-Computer Science and Technology

I.Mission and orientation

Over the years our discipline has been research-based and international. We have devoted, and will continue to devote, extensive effort to build a world-class computer science discipline constructed according to main-stream, specialized school-running ideas,large-scale technical innovation, compounded student cultivation, and an international faculty team. Over 30 years of unremitting effort, our discipline has developed outstanding teaching qualities, strong research capabilities and has become widely influential. According to the prestigious SJTU ranking, in 2015 our discipline ranked among the world’s top 150-200. According to the QS ranking, our discipline ranked 30 among all the computer science disciplines in Chinese universities.

II.Superiorities and features

1.Historical Advantages. Many outstanding stars, such as Dr. Yili Lu, etc., have arisen from our discipline. For a long time, our discipline has been superior in artificial intelligence, computer vision, pattern recognition, cloud computing, and big data processing.

2.Platform Advantages. Our discipline has established the Fujian key laboratory of machine intelligence and robotics, the Fujian Key laboratory of sensing and computing for smart city, and other high-quality teaching and research platforms. Our discipline, supported by the 211 and 985 Projects, is rated the key discipline of Fujian province.

3.Team Advantages. Our discipline has 1 teacher with NSFC Outstanding Youth Fund, and 6 teachers, each of whom has one of the following distinguished titles: Min River Distinguished Professor, Key Talent Project of Fujian Province, New-century Talent Program of Fujian Province, Youth Talent Program of Fujian Province.

4.Scientific Research Advantages . During the last four years, more than 100 famous SCI-indexed papers have been published. In addition, we have made 7 pattern productized and successfully applied 54 NSFC funding projects.

5.Student Cultivation Advantages. Our discipline is highly attractive to excellent candidates. On the average, our minimum score for undergraduate admission is 80 points higher than that for the first-tier. The admission rates of master and PhD students is as low as 21% and 38%, respectively. Our student employment rate reaches 96%. Our students have exhibited excellent performance in various IT contests, such as ACM-ICPC, SCILab, Spark China 2014, CCDM 2014 and Ghosts Challenge 2013, etc.

6.Regional Superiority and Features. Our discipline has carried out wide and effective academic communication and research cooperation with well-known institutions in Taiwan and Southeast Asia. In 2016, our discipline will recruit undergraduate students in Malaysia. Among all Chinese universities, our discipline is the first to provide overseas undergraduate education.

III.Cultivation goals

Our discipline aims to cultivate high-level computer science theorists and professional engineers of computer technology. Our students are required to master a solid and broad basic theory and systematic specialized knowledge. Our students are also expected to identify, analyze and solve problems, Moreover, our students, to build harmonious interpersonal relationships and adapt to society, shall have good English reading, writing and speaking skills, as well as sound bodies and a healthy psychology.

IV.Research directions

1.Computer Application Technology. The leaders of this direction include Prof. Hanzi Wang, Prof. Cheng Wang, Prof. Rongrong Ji, etc. This direction mainly focuses on computer vision, remote sensing image processing, multimedia technology, machine learning, digital medical techniques, etc. This direction also has provided high-level technical support and technology consultant services to national defense departments, local governments, and IT companies.

2.Intelligence Science and Technology. The leaders of this direction include Prof. Changle Zhou and Prof. Xiaodong Shi. This direction mainly focuses on mental imitation, art computation, natural language processing, etc. The research carried out is systematic and innovative and has formed its own style.

3.Computer Software and Theory. The leader of this direction is Prof. Defu Zhang. Theoretically, this direction focuses on computation models and distributed algorithms; from a practical standpoint, this direction focuses on big data analyzing and processing and intelligent algorithms for finance/restaurant/logistics.

4.Computer Architecture. The key member of this direction is Dr. Wu Suzhen (Associate Professor), who focuses on computer storage and network storage systems; a series of world-class research results on this direction have been published.

V.Domestic and international influence

Since 2012, our discipline has sent more than 100 teachers and students overseas for academic visits and exchanges, and has held 20 international and domestic conferences. More than 30 overseas students, including undergraduate, master, and doctoral students, have enrolled in our discipline.

Our faculties are encouraged to collaborate with enterprises and contribute to public projects. For example, our discipline is assisting the Big data and cloud computing Center at Anxi IT park, and is building two united laboratories with Meiya Pico and iFLYTEK. Our research achievements have been transferred to well-known companies, such as Huawei, Sichuan Changhong, etc. Our cloud natural language processing platform offers services to various government departments and sectors.

Our discipline has achieved remarkable advances in research. In the past four years alone, the discipline has published hundreds of articles in influential academic journals. The number of ESI extended version high cited papers is thirteen, of which, six achieved provincial and ministerial level awards. Additionally, our discipline has undertaken a large number of research projects, including 973, 863, all types of NSFC projects, and a multitude of projects commissioned by enterprises and institutions.
