Xiamen University (XMU), established in 1921 by Tan Kah Kee, a well-known patriotic overseas Chinese leader, was the first Chinese university founded by an overseas Chinese. It is the only university that enjoys the privileged support from both the “211 Project” and the “985 Project” in China's Special Economic Zones. ( The "211 Project" is a national project ensuring that the best 100 universities in China receive preferential financial support in the 21st century, and the "985 Project" aims to contribute to the elevation of major Chinese universities to the status of world-class universities.)

XMU is recognized as a first-class national university with an international reputation as a centre of excellence and ranks among the top 20 of over 2,000 universities and colleges in China . X MU campuses are situated around the Xiamen Bay , opposite Taiwan across the Taiwan Strait , commanding a beautiful view of green hills and the blue sea . It boasts the most beautiful campuses in China , even in Asia .

XMU has a graduate school and 26 schools and colleges consisting of 66 departments, as well as over 150 research institutes. The university offers 185 PhD programmes, 279 master's programmes, and 83 undergraduate programmes. Currently, there are almost 40,000 full-time students, including over 2,5 00 international students.Since its founding in 1921, XMU has produced more than 200,000 graduates, and over 60 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering have studied or worked at XMU.

XMU has a highly professional faculty of 2,536, who have been attracted to Xiamen from across as well as outside China. Currently, professors and researchers with doctorates obtained from overseas universities are playing an increasingly important role in the enhancement of XMU teaching and research quality .

On the newly built Xiang'an campus, there will be XMU High-tech Innovation Incubator Centre , the Southern Base for the International Promotion of the Chinese language, School of Life Sciences , Medical School, School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, School of Public Health , College of Ocean ography and Earth Sciences, College of Environment and Ecology, and Institute of Energy Research. XMU persists in creating an atmosphere and environment conducive to learning and research.

In recent years, XMU has prided itself on its remarkable scientific and research achievements, having landed, between 2006 and 2011, over 700 grants at the national level and published 16 research reports in top international high-level scientific journals, such as Science, Nature, Cancer Cell, the Lancet, etc. XMU has an exceptional team for research on the humanities and social sciences, leading the nation in such fields as Taiwan studies, Southeast Asian studies, economic studies, and accounting studies.

As one of the earliest institutions in China to run courses for overseas students , XMU has been actively engaged in cultural exchanges between China and the west. In 1956, the University set up its Overseas Correspondence College, later renamed the Overseas Education College, and in 1981 it started to enrol resident international students. To date,close to 40,000 international students from over 100 nations and regions have studied at XMU .

In recent years, XMU has increasingly become internationalized, having established cooperative and collaborative ties with over 170 overseas universities in countries like the USA, the UK, Japan, France, Russia,etc, and regions such as HK, Taiwan and Macao . It has also formed a multi-lateral cooperative relationship with other universities around the world, with the signing of the Agreement on the Global University 8 Consortium. XMU has set up 15 Confucius Institutes around the world which play an important role in promoting cultural exchanges between China and the rest of the world.

XMU has sent hundreds of scholars and teachers abroad to engage in joint research projects, participate in advanced study programmes and attend conferences. Since 1980, several thousand foreign experts have been invited to teach, give lectures and do research at XMU . It has hosted hundreds of international or regional academic conferences. A number of world-renowned scientists and scholars, including Nobel laureates Chen-Ning Yang and Tsung Dao Lee , have been awarded XMU honorary or visiting professors hip .
