The university offers a broad range of activities aiming to enrich master students’ theoretical and experiential learning and professional development. Trainings, workshops and seminars, covering varieties of themes and topics, both generic and subject-specific, are often offered at both university and school/department levels. You may also be provided with opportunities to work as a teaching assistant, research assistant, or intern at XJTLU. Depending on the programme, field trips and company visits may be organized, and invited talks may be given by the industrial experts and professionals. Such activities will not only support you in your programme study, but also develop your personal and professional skills and enhance your overall employability.
Careers
Graduates of this programme are prepared to excel in diverse industries, spanning chemical and material science, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, food and beverage sectors (focusing on quality assurance and innovative formulations), and analytical laboratories. Their skills and expertise have garnered employment at prestigious organisations such as Johnson & Johnson, Novo Nordisk, Abbott Laboratories, Fosun International, and companies located at BioBay (Suzhou). Furthermore, some of our graduates have embarked on PhD studies, supported by merit-based scholarships, a testament to their remarkable academic achievements and potential for groundbreaking research.
Overview
The MRes Advanced Chemical Sciences programme provides you with the education and training needed to understand different aspects of the field of chemical sciences. The programme covers a wide range of topics, from synthetic chemistry to nanotechnology, with analytical methods and lab-based training. Strong emphasis is placed on developing your project management and professional skills. After completing the taught modules, you will conduct an 18-month extensive research project that leads to the master’s dissertation. Your studies will be guided by a customised learning plan that considers your background, interests, and career aspirations, incorporating advice from your supervisor and academic and development advisers.
The programme offers students two pathways: computational chemistry and XJTLU-JITRI joint-supervision pathways.
Computational chemistry pathway
The scientific literature indicates a trend of applications of computational tools to aid scientific discovery. An increasing number of papers in leading chemistry journals have incorporated computational analysis. As such, computational chemistry should be one of the core subjects in training next-generation professional scientists, technologists, and chemical/materials engineers. Our computational chemistry pathway targets chemistry graduates and those with a bachelor’s degree in molecular chemistry/molecular biology, pharmaceutical sciences, condensed matter physics, mathematics, and materials science who wish to acquire expertise in applying computational simulation to their disciplines.
XJTLU-JITRI joint-supervision pathway
This programme also offers the XJTLU-JITRI joint supervision pathway, which combines the strengths of XJTLU with those of the research institutes and leading enterprises of Jiangsu Industrial Technology Research Institute (JITRI) to promote in-depth integration between industry, education and research. Through this innovative training model integrating specialised module study, industrial research practice, and a dual supervision mechanism, we aim to cultivate cross-disciplinary talents who are innovative, application-oriented, and have a high-level international perspective.
