School of Science at XJTLU, National Supercomputing Center in Wuxi, and Wuxi Science and Technology Bureau Hold Strategic Tri-Party Cooperation Meeting

On Wednesday, December 11, 2024, the School of Science at Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU),National Supercomputing Center in Wuxi (NSCCWX), and the Wuxi Science and Technology Bureau convened a high-level strategic meeting in Wuxi. The discussions centered on optimizing the utilization of the supercomputing resources, fostering collaborative innovation in frontier research projects related to the fields of Bioinformatics, Biomedicine and Materials Science, and establishing frameworks for joint talent cultivation in a number of key scientific areas.

Accompanied by the technical team from the National Supercomputing Center in Wuxi (NSCCWX), the delegation from the School of Science toured the Center's impressive core equipment and world leading technical facilities. The technical team provided a comprehensive introduction to NSCCWX's hardware architecture and its practical applications in addressing complex scientific challenges, showcasing the Center's strategic significance as a national platform for technological innovation, cutting edge research and its contributions to local industrial and economic development.

Professor John Moraros, Dean of the School of Science, XJTLU commented: “NSCCWX’s impressive computational capabilities, highly skilled talent, and vast technological resources help serve the country’s major scientific research needs and hold a prominent position in the international high-performance computing (HPC) domain globally. It is particularly impressive to note the kindness and humble attitude of its outstanding director and staff and their open minded and collegial approach to work collaboratively with a diverse group of partners to help address some of the biggest challenges facing our world today.”

During the discussions, representatives from all three parties explored ways to effectively integrate NSCCWX's resource advantages to help advance cutting-edge scientific research and industrial applications in the various fields. The meeting highlighted the transformative potential of HPC in areas such as climate change modeling, bioinformatics, materials design, and biomedical research, leading to broad consensus among the participants. In addition, the three parties plan to collaborate on joint talent cultivation programmes to help nurture globally competitive and innovative professionals as the next generation of promising researchers. The Wuxi Science and Technology Bureau expressed its full support for this cooperation, pledging to strengthen the university-industry collaboration and facilitate regional technological and industrial transformation and upgrading on a large scale.

National Supercomputing Center in Wuxi (NSCCWX) serves as a pivotal hub in the field of high-performance computing (HPC) in China and across the world, representing cutting edge innovation and highlighting the nation’s supercomputing capabilities. Its flagship system, the Sunway TaihuLight has repeatedly claimed the top spot on global supercomputing rankings, making it one of the fastest supercomputers in the world. Entirely developed within China, this system signifies a major breakthrough in HPC technology, providing critical support for addressing strategic national scientific priorities and global challenges.

Since its inception, NSCCWX has successfully addressed numerous complex scientific challenges in key areas such as climate change modeling, earthquake simulation, aerospace engineering, materials science and biomedical research, significantly advancing technical knowhow and building expertise in various academic disciplines. The Center has also garnered multiple prestigious international accolades in the HPC field, including the Gordon Bell Prize (GBP)—the highest honor in global HPC applications—highlighting its pivotal role in the international scientific community.

This trilateral meeting between the School of Science at XJTLU, the National Supercomputing Center in Wuxi (NSCCWX), and the Wuxi Science and Technology Bureau marks a strong beginning for a promising partnership, injecting robust momentum into XJTLU’s commitment to further develop university-industry cooperation and support regional technological development. Looking ahead, the three parties will engage in deep collaboration across areas such as scientific research, talent cultivation, supercomputing applications, and technology commercialization, working together to propel Wuxi’s technological and industrial development to new heights, enhance XJTLU’s and China’s scientific innovation capabilities, and further advance the widespread implementation and practical applications of HPC technologies across diverse scientific fields in support of national and global strategic priorities.
