On 9 October, the International Business School Suzhou (IBSS) at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) successfully hosted an induction for the 2024 QTEM (Quantitative Techniques for Economics and Management) Master’s exchange programme. The event featured Professor Ewout van der Schaft, Associate Dean for Internationalisation, Dr Fan Liu, Director of the QTEM programme at IBSS, and Ms Yue Jiang, the Greater China representative of the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), who delivered insightful presentations. Additionally, the event also included presentations from two QTEM exchange students— Ella Björck from Tilburg School of Economics and Management, and Cyriaque Goossens from Solvay Brussels School of Economics and Management—who shared their learning experiences and insights from participating in the QTEM programme.
The induction commenced with a warm welcome from Professor Ewout van der Schaft to all the attendees, where he mentioned that IBSS is one of the four Chinese academic members, together with Zhejiang University, Xiamen University, and Harbin Institute of Technology. Subsequently, he provided the students with a comprehensive background introduction to the QTEM programme. Ewout emphasized that all IBSS selected QTEM students will gain international experience by studying for one semester in top business schools from Asia, Europe, Africa and North America.

Following this, Dr Fan Liu elaborated on the application process and requirements for joining the QTEM programme, offering guidance to students interested in applying. Lastly, in order to help students gain a clearer understanding of the requirements of the GMAT exam, Ms Yue Jiang delivered an insightful presentation on the topic, providing a thorough explanation.

During the student sharing session, Cyriaque Goossens expressed that the dual pursuit of academic and career prospects impelled him to join this project. Cyriaque considers the emphasis on quantitative analytical training in the QTEM programme to be an indispensable skill in today’s academic research. Additionally, the dual degree certificate and international social network obtained through the programme greatly enhanced his competitiveness in the international job market. Furthermore, Ella Björck also shared her experience in the Global Business Analytics Challenge as part of the QTEM programme. She passionately recommended that fellow students participate in this project and challenge, emphasizing, “The programme offers training in in sub-skills and storytelling, as well as opportunities to engage with students from different schools through online sessions. It also focuses on data analytics, which is valuable for the job market. I strongly encourage all of you to join, as it offers the possibility to learn a lot, regardless of your current level in data analytics.”
