Exploring other research fields at XJTLU: My summer well spent

I’ve always been fascinated by the intersection of business and science, which led me to an exciting opportunity at XJTLU. My journey with XJTLU began as a student, but it was the University’s strong academic research environment and high research reputation that truly drew me in.

This summer, I felt honoured to receive a recommendation from Professor John Moraros, Dean of the School of Science, to join a lab SURF project led by Dr Justin Fendos. The project revolved around Course-based Undergraduate Research Experience (CUREs) in STEM, a concept that integrates scientific practices and fosters collaboration and discovery. My research topic delved into the CUREs practice within a mouse genetics module at a prestigious university in Shanghai.

Working with Dr Fendos was a rewarding experience. He’s a conscientious and responsible teacher, whose rigorous approach to academia is both inspiring and educational. A typical day for me involved data processing, creating tables and figures, and manuscript writing. In the afternoons, my partner and I often met with Dr Fendos to discuss our progress and receive valuable feedback. It was a demanding routine, but the intellectual stimulation kept me motivated.

Professor Moraros was a significant source of support and encouragement. His words of wisdom were a guiding light, especially when I felt out of my depth in the scientific research realm. My experience at XJTLU was also marked by the memorable friendship I formed with Yiying Li, a fellow lab SURF participant. Her insights and assistance were invaluable.

While my academic background is in business, I’ve always been intrigued by biology and related fields. The challenges of lab work, such as the frustration of having to redo data presentations, are part of the learning curve. Adapting to the lab’s working environment and team culture was made easier through open communication with my supervisor and colleagues.

For other undergraduates interested in research, I’d echo the advice of Adam Grant, an American author: “Failing would yield less regret than failing to try.” It’s important to explore interests beyond your degree programme; you never know where you might find your passion.

The people I’ve met, and the places I’ve been have become significant during my time here and it’s been a fulfilling adventure. I look forward to seeing where this path leads.
