Recently, Dr Daniel Hampson, Associate Professor in the Department of Intelligent Operations and Marketing at Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) International Business School Suzhou (IBSS), was interviewed by China Global Television Network (CGTN). During the interview, he reviewed the rise of the Chinese retail supermarket "Pangdonglai" and shared his insights.

Located in a fourth-tier city in China, Pangdonglai, with only 13 stores, has quickly become a hot topic on social media due to its genuine products, meticulous service, and innovative business model, even promoting the prosperity of the local tourism economy. The success story of Pangdonglai is not only eye-catching, but the transformative thinking behind it is also worth learning from and drawing lessons for the Chinese retail industry.

Dr Daniel Hampson emphasized in the interview that employee care is one of the key factors in the success of Pangdonglai. He pointed out: " Employees in the retail industry have a very difficult job. It's very demanding. And the only way that those frontline employees maintain sincere smiles and sincere willingness to help customers, which is what a lot of consumers loyal to Pangdonglai value, is that those employees are truly happy. It takes courage to make some decisions that Yu Donglai has made – to give employees 30 days of annual leave, to give them grievance bonuses."

Additionally, Pangdonglai is also assisting other retailers in store renovations and promoting its own brands. Dr Daniel Hampson stated that the continuous innovation in Pangdonglai's business model is also a significant factor in its success. They keep up with the evolving consumer demands, constantly exploring and implementing new business strategies to meet the market's new expectations.
