Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University’s (XJTLU’s)  International Business School Suzhou (IBSS) and key partner the Asia Institute have jointly launched the second edition of the IBSS Virtual Business Project Competition. The opening ceremony was held online on 17 July 2023  and the competition will last for three weeks until 5 August.

2nd IBSS Virtual Business Project Competition

One hundred and forty-four students from over 20 universities all around the world have been grouped into 24 teams, with each team consisting of three IBSS students and three students from universities situated on five different continents. Examples of participating universities include Trinity College Dublin, Ireland; the University of Cape Town, South Africa; the University of Monterrey, Mexico; Chulalongkorn University, Thailand; and Simon Fraser University, Canada. Each team has been assigned a mentor to provide guidance and work on real-world projects with organisations and companies in Asia, to help identify solutions that can be implemented. All projects are addressing various UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Bradley Feuling

During the online opening ceremony, Bradley Feuling, Chairman and CEO of The Asia Institute, expressed his gratitude to IBSS, the three collaborating companies and all participating faculty and mentors, stating:

This is an unforgettable and meaningful experience for everyone. We received nearly 300 applications this year. Students from all over the world overcame challenges of time, space, and language to gather here. Working in a multicultural team, students should always remember to be patient and maintain nice and close communication with your teammates. I wish all the students remarkable achievements, valuable experiences, and precious friendships in the next three weeks.

Prof. Ewout van der Schaft

IBSS Associate Dean International Professor Ewout van der Schaft added:

This project initiated by IBSS is core to our vision to be the most international business school in China. Our mission is building a bridge between East and West; this is exactly what this project does by bringing together students from all around the world. We are glad to see that this second edition is even more successful than last year, and we will make this a tradition for many more years to come.

UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

During the session, detailed explanations about the schedule were provided and questions from the attending students were answered. Following the successful first competition in 2022, this year’s competition is more mature and has been highly anticipated. The programme aims to develop talents with sustainable business development skills and practical experience, focusing on enhancing students’ abilities in time management, cross-cultural communication and cooperation in diversified teams, as well as reinforcing their sense of ethics and social responsibility.
Through this competition, students have the opportunity to understand the real challenges faced in business projects, participate in making plans for practical improvement and gain valuable experience for their future careers. Meanwhile, the collaborating enterprises have the chance to discover talents from universities and gain inspiration for improvement. The project has brought positive and beneficial impacts to both participating students and relevant enterprises.
