We often ask Y1 students why they want to study industrial design. Many answer that they want to become like Steve Jobs, the legendary CEO from Apple, or that they like the iPhone or iPad. It is these students that will benefit most from the IND101 module ‘User Needs’, the module that kicks off our BEng Industrial Design programme in Y2.
In this module students will become aware that industrial design from companies like Apple, are the outcome of a long design process. During this process, industrial designers collaborate with specialists from disciplines such as design research, interaction design, programming, marketing, material research, engineering, to create a product that adds value for its user(s).
The IND101 module introduces fundamental design studio concepts and practices that enable Y2 industrial design students to develop such a product. They will learn to identify design problems that are worth solving. They will learn a basic user research methodology and develop competences in collaboration, visualization, prototyping, oral presentation and much more.
