The School of Foreign Languages invited Ge Shuhui from Jiangsu Provincial Zhenjiang No.1 High School to deliver a lecture titled "The Qualities Required of Foreign Language Teachers in Middle Schools" in the library's report hall on July 2. The lecture was hosted by Deputy Director Li Jiajun, with the participation of all first- and second-year normal education students, education interns as well as their mentoring teachers.
At the beginning of the lecture, Mr. Ge introduced the basic concepts of the middle school English curriculum, which focuses on moral education as the soul, competence as the priority, fundamentals as the foundation, and innovation as the guide. Subsequently, he pointed out some problems existing in the professional development of middle school English teachers, including neglecting the update of professional knowledge and skills, being overly profit-driven, having a weak cultural awareness, lacking sufficient information screening ability, and owning a low degree of integration between theory and practice.
Next, Mr. Ge elaborated on the qualities that middle school foreign language teachers should possess in the context of the new curriculum reform. He believed that teachers must first possess ideological qualities, including a firm political stance and noble professional ethics. Secondly, they should have personality qualities, requiring teachers to be tolerant, patient and responsible, and serve as role models for students.
In terms of knowledge qualities, Mr. Ge emphasized that teachers should not only have a solid foundation in the English language but also understand the culture and social customs of English-speaking countries to better facilitate cross-cultural communication. In terms of professional qualities, Mr. Ge listed five key points: language expression ability, socio-linguistic competence, teaching ability, educational research ability, and the ability to apply modern educational information technology.
During the lecture, Mr. Ge also shared strategies for improving the qualities of middle school English teachers based on his many years of teaching experience and specific cases. He suggested that teachers should continuously improve their listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation abilities through continuous learning and training. Additionally, Mr. Ge emphasized that teachers should focus on the comprehensive development of students, cultivating their language abilities, cultural awareness, thinking qualities, and learning abilities.
At the end of the lecture, Deputy Director Li Jiajun expressed his gratitude to Mr. Ge for his excellent presentation and placed high expectations on the English education normal students who attended the lecture. He pointed out that the qualities of foreign language teachers directly affect students' learning outcomes and quality improvement. As normal students, they should always maintain enthusiasm for learning and exploration, enhancing their professional qualities and teaching abilities through educational practice activities such as internships, teaching practice, and studies.
This lecture provided a valuable learning opportunity for English education normal students in the School of Foreign Languages.
The students who attended the lecture expressed that the content was informative, and they felt greatly benefited. They vowed to devote themselves with greater enthusiasm and motivation to the cultivation of teaching skills and practice in the future, striving to become excellent middle school foreign language teachers.
