Tongji SEM climbs 7 places to 28th in FT Masters in Management Ranking

On October 28, 2019, the Financial Times (hereinafter referred to as FT) officially released its 2019 Masters in Management (MiM) Ranking. The Master in Management program of School of Economics and Management (SEM), Tongji University, has made a big leap of 7 places, ranking 28th in the world and 2nd in China, which is a continuous progress from the ranking of 35th in 2018 and 36th in 2017.
The top 10 list is mainly occupied by famous business schools in Switzerland, Britain, France, the Netherlands, Austria, Italy, Sweden and other countries. The competitions are quite fierce. Only two of the top Schools Economics and Management in mainland China have entered the top 100 list. In addition to Tongji School of Economics and Management (SEM), Antai College of Economics and Management of Shanghai Jiaotong University is also listed. The Schools from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan include Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Business School, Hong Kong Baptist University Business School, Taiwan University of Political Science, and Taiwan’s Sun Yat-Sen University. It is worth noting that the two business schools from mainland China are ranked higher than the others in the Greater China Region.
Tongji SEM’s Masters in Management is an academic master’s program. It systematically teaches economic management theories, research methodologies and specialty-based frontier courses. Also, it maintains interaction with international leading business schools to improve students’ global vision and practical implementation capability. The proportion of international students in the Masters in Management Program in Tongji SEM accounts for more than 35%.
Tongji SEM’s Masters in Management Program has reached a new high in FT Masters in Management Ranking 2019, thanks to the long-term interactions between academic institutions and industrial sectors advocated by Prof. Li Yuan, Dean of Tongji SEM. Under his strong leadership, SEM has been dedicated to carrying out scientific research and talent development & training efforts in China for many years. FT’s ranking proves that the international education market has highly recognized the talent training model developed by Tongji SEM. Dean Li also stressed that China’s economy, which has been transformed into high-quality growth model, has given rise to many prosperous industries, offering students broader career development opportunities, providing teaching faculties with rich research data and driving the strong growth of SEM.
In recent years, Tongji SEM has concentrated on promoting academic breakthroughs. The total number of academic papers in 2018 has increased by 17%. The quality of publications has been continuously improved, and the number of high-level international journal articles has increased by 94%. All of these can guarantee the strong teaching capability in various disciplines; In addition to cultivating the students’ capability of theoretical research, SEM pays attention to strengthening the practice and improvement of practical operation skills, providing students with internship opportunities at home and abroad, and improving the professional adaptability of students in the global environment. SEM will apply the international resources and best practice which have been accumulated in the operation of MBA and EMBA programs to the full-time master’s program, and in the future will provide students with more opportunities to interact with overseas students and exchange students as well as more exchange programs with well-known overseas institutions.
Deng Chenliang, alumnus who graduated from Tongji SEM’s Masters in Management program in 2016, is currently a senior analyst specialized in the automotive sector with Changjiang Securities Research Institute. He believes that the unforgettable learning experience during the study for master’s degree played an important role in helping him overcome the challenges and difficulties in his work. Deng Chenliang was an undergraduate of civil engineering, but found himself more interested in economics and business management, so he chose cross-discipline graduate program with Tongji SEM. He has been engaged in industry research since he graduated, and this job requires strong learning ability. During the master’s degree program, he was often required to do case studies of multinational companies within a short deadline, which effectively cultivated his capability of structural thinking and quick learning. He was deeply impressed by the presentations of the corporate strategy analysis course, which required him to provide advice to the company from a management perspective, inspiring him to think about the tactics and directions of the company’s development, which has been quite helpful to his current job of studying listed companies. Industry research is essentially business case study, with greater emphasis on the depth and breadth of research. In the two and a half years of studying in Tongji SEM, he has got his business analysis skills trained very well.
