NJU’s efforts to strengthen ties with overseas counterparts have resulted in the establishment of cooperative institutions such as Center for Chinese and American Studies (co-established with the Johns Hopkins University), Sino-German Institute for Law Studies (co-hosted with Gottingen University), and Lab of Multi-Media Tele-education (with Japanese Ministry of Tele-Communication).
The Cooperation is divided into two types: Joint Education Programs with Outside, and International Dual Degree Programs.
A Joint Educational Program with Outside refers to an educational program jointly run by a non-Chinese educational institution and Nanjing University that operates within China proper enrolling mainly Chinese citizens. Examples include the Johns Hopkins University-Nanjing University Center for Chinese and American Studies, and Maastricht School of Management.
An International Dual Degree Program refers to Nanjing University and an international university jointly teaching, through models of 1+1，2+1，2+2 or 3+X (X≥1), undergraduate or graduate students who are registered at Nanjing University and will, upon graduation, be granted diplomas, bachelor’s degrees, master’s degrees or doctoral degrees by Nanjing University and corresponding diploma and degrees by the international partner university. Examples include the dual bachelor’s degrees program between Nanjing University and University of Waterloo in Canada, and the dual master’s degrees program between Nanjing University and University of Göttingen in Germany.
A Joint Education Program with Outside focuses on the running of the program. Its regulations include general principles, establishment, management and organization, teaching requirements, assets and finance, the change or termination, and the legal responsibility. The general principles explain the main concept of running the program, that is, to introduce from abroad quality resources and public welfare work undertaken in accordance to Chinese law. Activities of a religious nature are prohibited from educational programs. All school programs are under the supervision of the relevant departments of the Chinese government in cooperation with the local governments.
The international dual degree programs are one of the important measures Nanjing University takes to become a first-rate university, and they are programs catering to undergraduates and graduates registered at Nanjing University. Students participating in such a program can receive diplomas and degrees from Nanjing University and an international university. With some programs, students can study in two universities.
Since the dual degree programs involve student credits and registration, the departments participating in the administration of these programs include not only the Office of International Cooperation and Exchanges, but also the Office of Academic Affairs, Graduate School, Office of Student Affairs and Institute for International Students. The regulations of the international dual degree programs stipulate the responsibilities of each functional department, and the Office of International Cooperation and Exchanges is in charge of the negotiation and signing of agreements and international affairs of students joining in the program.
