From September 16 to 20, the 48th ICPC International Collegiate Programming Contest World Finals (2024 ICPC World Finals) was held in Astana, Kazakhstan. After a five-year hiatus, the team of NEU made its fourth appearance at the ICPC World Finals, securing an impressive 47th place in the global ranking and setting a new record for the university in this competition.
This year’s contest attracted over 73,000 participants from 103 countries and regions across six continents, with 3,524 universities registering for the competition. In the end, 141 teams distinguished themselves in the regional contests to qualify for the world finals.
Our team was led by Di Kui, the Party secretary of the School of Computer Science and Engineering, and Huang Da, associate dean of the School of Innovation and Entrepreneurship. It was coached by Liu Xiaofeng, a senior lab experimenters of the School of Computer Science and Engineering and coach of the NEU ACM Innovation Team. The team comprised Su Kun and Xu Yuehao from the School of Computer Science and Engineering, along with Chen Shaohuang from the Faculty of Robot Science and Engineering, representing NEU. This marks our school’s fourth qualification for the world finals, following previous appearances in 2016, 2017, and 2019. After five consecutive hours of intense competition in programming and problem-solving, the team of NEU achieved a ranking of 47th, once again setting a new world ranking record for our school in this high-level competition.
The ICPC International Collegiate Programming Contest is designed to demonstrate university students' creativity, teamwork, and their ability to write programs, analyze, and solve problems under pressure. After over 40 years of development, the ICPC has been the oldest, largest, and most prestigious programming competition for college students in the world, often referred to as the "Olympics" of the IT industry.
