Completion of the Selection for the 2023 Ng Teng Fong Legal Scholarship

The selection process for the 2023 Ng Teng Fong Law Scholarship took place from June 13 to July 6, with the signing ceremony completed on July 7. The judging committee, composed of experts from the Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation and relevant units, along with members of the Mainland and Hong Kong-Macao Legal Education Alliance, conducted the initial review of application materials submitted by 99 students from Alliance member universities and five key universities outside the Alliance. Subsequently, interviews were conducted in Beijing and Shanghai for the 52 students who passed the initial review. Following a comprehensive assessment of their professional knowledge, language proficiency, moral character, career planning, adaptability, and oral communication skills, the judging committee selected 10 students to receive the 2023 Ng Teng Fong Law Scholarship, enabling them to pursue LLM or JD degrees in Hong Kong.

In this round, a total of 18 students from China University of Political Science and Law (CUPL) applied for the scholarship. Among them, 11 students participated in the initial interview, and 4 students advanced to the final selection. Ultimately, two graduating students from the School of International Law, Zhao Xilun (mainland of China), and Li Yung Ching (Hong Kong SAR of China), successfully secured the Ng Teng Fong Law Scholarship and completed the signing process.

As the Secretariat of the Alliance, CUPL organized the entire scholarship project selection process and hosted the Beijing interview sessions, while East China University of Political Science and Law, a member of the Alliance, managed the interview process in Shanghai. CUPL's Director of the Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan Affairs Office, Li Juqian, participated as an interviewer in the Beijing session, and Tang Yan, Deputy Director of the Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan Affairs Office, served as an interviewer in the Shanghai session.

During the Beijing interview session, Hu Ming, Council Chair of CUPL, visited Wong Yeuk Hung, the representative of Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation and General Manager of China business of Sino Group, and other interviewers of the scholarship. He highly recognized the foundation's significant contribution to the cultivation of international legal talent and promised that CUPL would continue to provide support and assistance for the selection process of the scholarship.



Introduction to the Mainland and Hong Kong-Macao Legal Education Alliance

The Alliance was jointly established in June 2017 by China University of Political Science and Law, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and the University of Macao. The Secretariat of the Alliance is located at China University of Political Science and Law. The Alliance, with 16 inaugural board members, including prestigious universities like Peking University, Tsinghua University, Renmin University of China, and others, has actively engaged in various activities to enhance legal education and cooperation between mainland China and Hong Kong-Macao. The Alliance has contributed to the integration of legal education in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and promoted exchange and cooperation between leading law schools in mainland China and Hong Kong-Macao.

Since its establishment, the alliance has actively carried out a series of activities, including research visits to mainland member universities, members within alliance from Beijing, Hong Kong and Macao universities visiting to the Hong Kong and Macao Basic Law Committee of the National People's Congress, teaching and research workshops on the Hong Kong and Macao Basic Law, university mock court exchange competitions, symposium on legal talent development in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, seminars on the cultivation of international legal talent, seminars on the training of foreign-related lawyers, conference on the cultivation of legal talents in the new era, and more. Leveraging the strength from partnership, the alliance has successfully organized four alliance council meetings, and hosted the organization and selection processes for the "Ng Teng Fong Law Scholarship" in 2018, 2019, 2021, and 2023. Additionally, the alliance has undertaken the nationwide theme essay competitions for Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan students in 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021. These efforts have actively contributed to promoting the integration of legal education in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, as well as fostering exchange and cooperation between mainland and Hong Kong-Macao leading law schools."
