The Third International Youth Academic Conference on Coal Mine Gas Prevention and Utilization was held in Xuzhou from November 29 to December 1. This conference was co-hosted by China University of Mining & Technology (CUMT) and the Professional Committee of Gas Hazard Prevention and Utilization under the China Association for Occupational Safety and Health. It was organized by the School of Safety Engineering, the National Engineering Research Center for Coal Mine Gas Control, the National Key Laboratory of Coal Mine Disaster Prevention and Control, the Editorial Board of the Journal of China University of Mining & Technology, the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Mining Science and Technology, and the Key Laboratory of Coal Mine Gas and Fire Prevention of the Ministry of Education. Attending the opening ceremony were Bian Zhengfu, Vice President of CUMT; Bi Qiang, Party Committee member, Deputy Chairman, and Secretary-General of the China Association for Occupational Safety and Health; He Xueqiu, Professor at the University of Science and Technology Beijing; Wang Kai, Professor at China University of Mining & Technology (Beijing); Liu Zegong, former Vice President of Anhui University of Science and Technology; Li Shugang, former Vice President of Xi'an University of Science and Technology; Ren Tingxiang, Professor at the University of Wollongong, Australia; and Cheng Yuanping, Director of the Professional Committee of Gas Hazard Prevention and Utilization. The opening ceremony was presided over by Zhai Cheng, Dean of the School of Safety Engineering at CUMT.
In his welcoming remarks, Vice President Bian Zhengfu extended a warm welcome to the conference participants and gave a brief introduction to the university. He mentioned that for a long time, China University of Mining & Technology (CUMT) has been dedicated to research on coal mine gas control, focusing its efforts on green and efficient mining as well as mine safety. The university has actively pursued technological breakthroughs, particularly in the areas of intelligent gas extraction and utilization, and prevention of coal mine gas outbursts. As a result, CUMT has produced a significant number of high-level research outcomes and cultivated a large number of high-quality innovative talents. It has become a center for knowledge innovation and talent cultivation in this discipline, enjoying a certain level of renown and influence both domestically and internationally.
Bi Qiang, Party Committee member, Deputy Chairman, and Secretary-General of the China Association for Occupational Safety and Health, Cheng Yuanping, Director of the Professional Committee of Gas Hazard Prevention and Utilization, and Li Shugang, an expert representative from Xi'an University of Science and Technology, delivered speeches at the opening ceremony.
During the keynote speech session, Professor Ren Tingxiang from the University of Wollongong, Australia, Professor Wang Kai from China University of Mining & Technology (Beijing), Professor Liu Shimin from Pennsylvania State University, USA, and Professor Wei Jianping from Henan Polytechnic University delivered presentations. The conference featured three specialized forums on gas hazard prevention and control, efficient gas extraction, and permeability enhancement in soft coal seams, as well as two graduate student forums. Experts presented reports centered on the prevention and utilization of gas hazards and new technologies and theories, offering fresh perspectives on gas hazard monitoring, early warning, and effective protection. These insights are of significant reference value for achieving the prevention and control of mine gas hazards and their efficient utilization under the backdrop of the dual carbon goals (peak carbon dioxide emissions and carbon neutrality). A total of 55 keynote speeches and 53 graduate student presentations were made during the conference.
Experts and technical personnel from 33 universities, including the University of Wollongong in Australia, Pennsylvania State University in the USA, Xi'an University of Science and Technology, University of Science and Technology Beijing, Henan Polytechnic University, and Chongqing University, as well as from 19 enterprises and institutions such as the China Academy of Safety Science and Technology, Jineng Holding Group, Lu’an Chemical Industry Group, and the China Coal Research Institute Co., Ltd., totaling more than 300 attendees, attended the conference.
