K C Wong Postdoctoral Fellowships
Xi’an Jiaotong University and The University of Edinburgh are seeking an outstanding candidate for the prestigious postdoctoral research fellowships funded by the K.C. Wong Foundation for 24 months initially. Subject to performance, the fellowship can be extended for another year. The purpose of these Fellowships is to provide the opportunity for early stage researchers from China (priority for graduates and faculties from Xi’an Jiaotong University) to conduct collaborative research at the University of Edinburgh with Xi’an Jiaotong University. After the successful completion of the fellowships at the University of Edinburgh, the K.C. Wong Fellows are expected to return to Xi’an Jiaotong University to continue their work.
The Fellows are expected to make a significant contribution to the field of Multiscale Thermofluids that is fundamental in the engineering physical sciences (i.e. disciplines of natural science, mathematics, engineering, and/or medical science) and with applications of high impact to society. The research topics should be related to fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, heat transfer and other related fields, and the fellows are welcome to propose their own research programmes. Some examples of some on-going research across the two universities are given below:
·ultra-high heat removal utilising non-equilibrium phase-change in membranes for cooling electronics;
·ice nucleation on novel surfaces for de-icing/anti-icing;
·bubble cavitation for targeted drug delivery;
·rarefied gas flows for silicon wafer industries etc.;
·water filtration and antifouling;
·fluid-surface interactions;
·porous media flows.
The successful candidates will be based at the University of Edinburgh and will work with academics in the School of Engineering, which in REF2021 came first in the UK for “research power”, with nearly 90% of our research rated as ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’. The University of Edinburgh is one of the world’s top 25 universities.
Your skills and attributes for success:
·PhD in engineering, physics, applied mathematics or closely related fields;
·Experience incomputational methods for multiscale thermofluids research;
·Experience in delivering research project results in an academic and/or industrial research context;
·Capable of working independently and collaboratively with researchers from different disciplines or technical backgrounds.
Eligibility for applicants:
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
•be current resident of the People’s Republic of China;
•hold a PhD degree when the Fellowships start (about to complete PhD defence or obtained within three years of the time of application);
•have a good command of spoken and written English.
The salary at Edinburgh University will be in the range of £37099 and £44263, depending on your experience. More information can be obtained either from Xi’an Jiaotong University (emails:ghtang@mail.xjtu.edu.cn;thermofluid@mail.xjtu.edu.cn) or from Edinburgh University (email: matthew.borg@ed.ac.uk).
In your application, please send the following documents:
•Full CV (in English and Chinese);
•1 A4 page Research Proposal on a topic of your choice in Multiscale Thermofluids (in English and Chinese);
•400-word personal statement describing your personal motivations and interests on how this fellowship would benefit you when you return to the People’s Republic of China (in English and Chinese);
•Award certificates.
Please send your application to Prof Guihua Tang (thermofluid@mail.xjtu.edu.cn) by 30 September 2023.
