Tianjin University mourns with profound sadness the passing of Professor James Fraser Stoddart, Nobel Laureate in Chemistry and former part-time professor at our university, who passed away on December 30, 2024, at the age of 82.
Born in May 1942, Professor Stoddart was a distinguished molecular scientist renowned for his groundbreaking research in supramolecular chemistry and molecular machines. He graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1966 and held esteemed positions at various prestigious universities, including Queen's University, the University of Sheffield, the University of Birmingham, UCLA, and Northwestern University.
Professor Stoddart joined Tianjin University in 2014, where he dedicated himself to nurturing young talent in China. His commitment to academic collaboration greatly enhanced the integration of Chinese research with global scientific advancements. He was instrumental in organizing the "Future of Molecular Science and Human Technology" seminar at Tianjin University, bringing together 33 leading scientists, including five Nobel Laureates.
A passionate mentor, Professor Stoddart established the Stoddart Development Fund at Tianjin University, donating his talent plan allowance to support young researchers in chemistry. Over his illustrious career, he published over a thousand papers, received numerous accolades, and trained nearly 500 doctoral students, many of whom now contribute to scientific research worldwide.
His contributions to the field of chemistry and the development of high-level talent in China are invaluable. Tianjin University honors his legacy and extends heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and all whose lives he touched. His spirit of inquiry and dedication to education will continue to inspire future generations.
