Prof. Cao’s main topics of research are cultural urban landscape development as well as sustainable and ecological landscape planning and design.
In his functions as head of the department since 2011, and based on national goals towards the development of a “human being environment”, Prof. Cao has worked to promote theoretical knowledge on traditional landscape architecture and heritage protection; produce innovative research in modern ecological technology; and explore modalities of regional and urban sustainability (cultural continuity and ecological sustainability) within the domain of landscape planning design theory and methodology.
Prof. Cao’s research activity is strongly interdisciplinary, intertwining the disciplines of water conservancy, environmental science and ecological restoration; his recent research projects deal with the principles and methods of urban stormwater management, ecological restoration, ecological infrastructure and other aspects of environmentally-friendly regional landscape planning.
He has done more than 50 landscape planning and design projects within the Tianjin University Architectural Planning and Design Research Institute, including waterfront landscape planning, tourism planning and design, new city center landscape planning and design, urban renewal design, and many more. His many awards include the Provincial and Ministerial Excellence Design Awards from the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Construction, and also the Excellent Design Award from the Ministry of Construction.
Professor Cao Lei obtained the professional Bachelor, Master and Doctor degrees in Architecture from Tianjin University. As the leading academic in the field of landscape architecture research, he has published 7 academic monographs and more than 40 papers in domestic academic journals.
