I. Development HistoryThe Institute of Architectural Technology and Science in the School of Architecture, Tianjin University, is an important research institute of this field. It was founded in the 1950s by Professor Shen Tianxing, a famous expert of architectural physics and one of the founders of architectural technology and science. Over the past 60 years, the institute has been dedicated to the research of the physical environment of architecture and city. Up to now, abundant achievements have been obtained and numerous top-level talents have been cultivated as well. Over 10 million Yuan has been invested to the institute in equipping apparatus and introducing talents since 2001, and the institute has established the Innovative Platform for Green Architecture Design Theory and Engineering Technology of the Project 985 with the continuous financial support from the Project 985 and the Project 211of the government. In 2003, the application for establishing the Tianjin Key Laboratory of Architecture Physical Environment and Ecological Technology was approved. Supported by the School of Architecture, the institute has integrated the preponderant disciplines of architecture technology and established the Tianjin University Research Institute of Architecture Technology and the Tianjin University Research Institute of Building Energy Efficiency. On this basis, the second-level discipline of architectural technology and science was approved as the key discipline of Tianjin in 2006, building a solid foundation for the development of this discipline in China.
II. Faculties of the Institute
Institute of Architectural Technology and Science now has 13 teachers, including 3 professors, 5 associate professors, and 5 lecturers. The institute owns the only state-level key disciplines of building science, and has a provincial-level key laboratory on physical building environment and ecological technology. All of these represent the advanced research level in this field, and the institute serves as an important platform of international communication. The research team includes over 10 professors and 70 master or doctoral students. Takinging over 10 state-level projects, the team has leading position in both research and design.
III. Research Directions
Under the guidance of state-level key discipline architectural design and theory, an energy-saving, environmental-friendly, and ecological discipline is formed with focus being traditional architectural physics, building structure and solar energy technology. Its main research area are new energy utilization technology, building energy conservation, physical features of buildings and cities, and also the digital measurement technology of architecture. It has the following four major research directions: 1. low-carbon urban planning and green-building design; 2. urban thermal environment and energy-saving building; 3. architectural lighting environment and urban lighting; 4. city noise control and auditorium acoustics.
IV. Major Achievements
Institute of Architectural Technology and Science within the school of architecture of Tianjin University is committed to solve complex problems arises in the development of rapid urban construction. It also provides services of technological consult, engineering design, and evaluation for government departments, owners of unit, and designing institute. Up to now, the institute has established long-term strategic cooperation with over 10 government departments and large-scale institutes, providing full range of high quality technical services. Through the integrated green optimization architecture design, the three goals of the habitat quality improvement, ecological and environmental protection ,and energy saving has been realized at the same time.
