01 Tournament Introduction
The Solar Decathlon China(SD China) is a solar building technology competition based on global universities. Each team designs and builds a high-performance full-size house with solar energy as the only energy source, and participates in the ten indicators, including architectural design, market potential, engineering design, publicity, innovation ability, comfort level, household appliances, home life, electric commuting, and energy performance.

The competition is sponsored by the China Overseas Development Association. The competition actively serves the national green ecological development strategy and the promotion of renewable energy utilization, and is committed to promoting high-quality urban development and industrial transformation. After being conceived in China in 2011, SD China has been supported by National Energy Administration, Ministry of Housing and urban-Rural Development, Central Committee of the Communist Youth League, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Finance, National Development and Reform Commission, and other national ministries and departments.
This is the third edition of the competition. The competition site is located in DeshengVillage, Zhangbei County, Zhangjiakou City. Chairman Xi Jinping visited Desheng Village on the eve of the Spring Festival in 2017. After four years of development, the spirit of his important speech took root here. SDC will further practice the concept of "green water and green mountains are golden mountains and silver mountains", and provide industrial demonstration effect for the national "30-60" goal of comprehensive utilization of distributed energy and green building in China's villages.

02 Team Tianjin U+Team Tianjin U+ team profile
Team Tianjin U+ is led by the School of Architecture ,Tianjin University, in collaboration with various institutions and disciplines such as the schools of environmental engineering, civil engineering, automatic engineering, APEC Sustainable Energy Center, mechanical engineering, Intelligence and Computation, and the transdisciplinary School of Future Engineering. It carries out school enterprise cooperation with the Tianjin University Research Institute of Architecture Design & Urban Planning Co., Ltd., cooperates with Tianjin Chengjian University and Oslo School of architecture and design, and integrates the technical forces of many enterprises to form a joint industry university research team. There were more than 20 team advisors and instructors, and more than 70 doctoral, graduate and undergraduate students.
03 Program presentation and project progress
The project, named R-CELLS, is a solar house prototype with ‘positive energy, full recycling, zero emission’ as the technical goals, aiming at creating ‘a lifetime healthy and sustainable home’. It symbolizes the self-adapting, self-circulating, and self-organizing characteristics of biological cells. By adapting prefabricated and customizable modules, innovative solar building integration technology, and close-to-nature design, it targets a solar energy housing prototype that can be replicated in rural and urban circumstances in North China.
From June 24-27, the National Convention and Exhibition Centerthe National Exhibition Center held its first exhibition on Green and Intelligent Buildings, with a total of 220,000 exhibitors and visitors. The R-CELLS booth was extremely popular, with more than 20 media including China News Network, Learning Power, and China Youth Daily reporting.
In August, the construction stage of the SDC2021 competition had started. After 20 days, the construction of R-CELLS was completed. During this period, teachers and students overcame many difficulties and steadily promoted the construction progress in the unpredicatable weather conditions. Finally, the building construction was successfully completed and passed the acceptance evaluation on September 14.
On October 10, Professor Yang Wei was invited to participate in the 2021 Beijing International Design Week "creative creation" exhibition jointly hosted by the school of architecture of Tianjin University and the urban environment design (UED) magazine, and shared the prototype of Sustainable Solar Energy Architecture——R-CELLS.

In the same year, our team's R-CELLS solar residential prototype design project won the first prize in the 2021 Youth "Eco-Creativity Green Action" Environmental Protection Competition co-sponsored by the Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-City Management Committee and sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-City Investment and Development Co., Ltd.
In 2022, Team Tianjin U+ team members and R-CELLS will meet again, and the 3rd China International Solar Decathlon Competition will finally kick off. At that time, we will exhibit the "ultimate version" of R-CELLS at the media day and hold a zero carbon Party, invite designers to stay and live 24 hours Lianmai and other colorful online and offline activities, to ensure that you will not miss any information about R-CELLS!
