The history of the School of Architecture can be traced to 1937 when the Department of Architecture at Tianjin Institute of Industry and Commerce was established well over 70 years ago. In 1952, the Chinese institutions of higher education were reorganized. The Department of Architectural Engineering of Jingu Private University(used to be Tianjin Institute of Industry and Commerce), the Department of Architectural Engineering of Northern Jiaotong University (used to be Tangshan Institute of Technology) and the Department of Civil Engineering of Tianjin University were merged and became the Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering of Tianjin University. In 1958, the Department of Architectural of Tianjin University was established. In 1997, the School of Architecture was established.
The School of Architecture (T-Arch) is composed of four departments (Department of Architecture, Urban and Rural Planning, Landscape Architecture, and Environmental Design) and two research centers (Institute of Architectural History & Theory and Institute of Architectural Technology and Science).
In 2021 QS World University Rankings, the School of Architecture of TJU ranked 50th in the world.
In the assessment by National Board of Architectural Accreditation of China (NBAA) in 1992 and 1995, SA obtained
the first batch of National Excellent Teaching Qualification in Architecture, both undergraduate and master programs. At present, Architecture (
ranked 3 in 2016 National Discipline Accreditation) , Urban and Rural Planning (
ranked 3 in 2016 National Discipline Accreditation) and Landscape (
ranked 5 in 2016 National Discipline Accreditation) are approved to be Level 1 discipline of China. All disciplines are authorized to confer doctoral degree and master's degree.
Long-term international partnership is established with many world renowned universities and research institutions. Students and faculties are supported for exchange programs as well as joint research projects.
In T-Arch, first-class teaching environment, excellent teaching staff, and diverse international programs are provided, which prepare students for the global challenges. The school has won many national teaching awards such as the National Special Prize in Excellent Teaching Achievements Awards of Universities and Colleges. These were achieved through long-standing practical education. Students have achieved success in many domestic and international design competitions such as First Prize of "D3 Housing Tomorrow 2015". For decades, thousands of undergraduates and hundreds of masters and doctoral students are graduated from the school.
