Part I "Urban·Environment·Design" (UED) Academic Committee
On June 5, 2021, the "Urban·Environment·Design" (UED) Academic Committee and Architectural Academic Media Development Seminar was successfully held in the School of Architecture, Tianjin University. "Urban·Environment·Design" (UED) was founded in 2004. It is co-sponsored by the School of Architecture of Tianjin University and Liaoning Science and Technology Press. The editorial board is composed by deans of universities across the country and well-known architects in China and internationally.
In the future, UED will focus on the latest developments in theoretical and historical research in the fields of architecture, planning, and landscape design with a pair of keen eyes. It will pay close attention to the current global design practice, excavate outstanding domestic and foreign architectural, urban and landscape design works, and pay attention to global changes in the urban and rural environment. Relying on the all-media platform of Chinese architectural design industry, which integrates magazine publishing, academic activities, exhibitions and new media, we hope to participate in the urban development, old cities renewal and rural construction of contemporary China from the angle of academic perspective, with design, technology and art as the entry point, and build a communication platform for academic media development of Chinese architectural design industry.
Kong Yuhang, dean of School of Architecture, Tianjin University, presided over the meeting and presented an opening speech. Song Chunzhi, president and editor-in-chief of Liaoning Science and Technology Publishing House, and Peng Lixiao, editor-in-chief of Urban, Environment and Design (UED) magazine also delivered individual speeches. Zhang Rui and Hu Yike from the School of Architecture of Tianjin University respectively introduced the positioning, columns and working system of editorial committee of UED. Afterwards, all the participating experts discussed the direction and content of the journal, academic influence and international cooperation, and the working mechanism of the editorial committee which efficiently laid a solid foundation for future work. Finally, Song Kun, the secretary of party committee at School of Architecture, Tianjin University, made a warp-up speech.
In his speech, Kong Yuhang, dean of The School of Architecture, Tianjin University, stated that recently with the changes in the working mode of UED and the injection of new blood, we can see a lot of positive changes in the process. At the same time, we have also seen changes in the development of disciplines. Previously, the three disciplines of architecture, planning, and landscape were scattered, but now there is a tendency to converge. In the future, we hope to record and respond to the development of the subject while maintaining the quality of UED. In the early stage of the incubation, I hope to see support and suggestions from all parties, not only today's discussion, but follow-up work around these topics.
Kong Yuhang, dean of School of Architecture, Tianjin University
Song Chunzhi, president and editor-in-chief of Liaoning Science and Technology Press, said in his speech that UED was rated as one of the top 100 media by People's Daily Online and has established a strong influence in the industry. I believe that in the future, both academic journals and works journals will develop equally. With the efforts of all parties and the injection of academic genes from universities, a new and better UED is awaiting.
In his speech, Peng Lixiao, editor-in-chief of "Urban Environment Design" (UED), shared his gratitude in running the magazine as the editor-in-chief of UED for the past 12 years, and expressed his confidence of the up-coming UED under the multi-party collaboration model in the future.
Song Chunzhi, president and editor-in-chief of Liaoning Science and Technology Press
Peng Lixiao, editor-in-chief of "Urban Environment Design" (UED)
Zhang Rui, deputy editor of the UED academic edition and associate professor of the School of Architecture of Tianjin University, shared the editorial department's development plan for the academic edition. She said that UED has experienced more than ten years of rapid development and is currently undergoing an important transformation stage. The orientation of future academic journals will be academic, forward-looking, and accommodating, with special manuscripts that can reflect the authoritative interpretation of time-effective major architecture and urban and rural planning ideas, and special topics that can focus on national strategy and major scientific researches. UED will set up columns reasonably, and establish an effective editorial board working mechanism to work around the long-term goals.
Zhang Rui, deputy editor of the UED academic edition and associate professor of the School of Architecture of Tianjin University
Hu Yike, deputy editor of the UED publication, deputy director of the Department of Landscape Architecture of the School of Architecture of Tianjin University, and associate professor of the School of Architecture of Tianjin University, reported on the positioning, purpose, and readership of the UED publication. He said that based on the traditional advantages of the UED Architects album, three principles should be clarified: First, the integration of architecture, planning, landscape, and environmental art; the second is the collaboration between works journals and academic journals; and the third is to make full use of digital media to maximize the value of resources. The main goal of the UED works magazine is to illustrate the period of time while reflecting the professionalism and entertaining the common readers. At the same time, it is proposed that paper media should achieve full coverage and reflect its collection value and archive value. Digital media needs to respond to the needs of readers at different levels, using video dynamic illustrations, visualization ,etc.
The works journal team made a summary of UED's columns and topics in recent years, and clarified the feature of "full cycle, cross-profession". At the same time, the team also conducted systematic research on "EL Croquis", "DOMUS", Japanese "New Architecture", "a+u" and other internationally renowned architects' albums, and proposed "Media Architectural Trends and Design Trends" and "Focus on Digital Media and technical support "stories behind the design" and other main development directions. Finally, he took the C3 Architectural Stand Series as an example and illustrated the appeal of conceptualizing the column. To summarize his speech, he proposed the responsibilities and work system of the editorial board.

Part 2 Architectural Academic Media Development Seminar
Zhang Li: Architectural journals need to make a decision
School of Architecture of Tianjin University has always held academics by dignity which should also reflect on the architectural media. From Dean Kong to Editor-in-Chief Peng, striving for academic excellence was always the goal. With the declining importance of paper media, UED has formed the existing influence and brand effect, and achieved growth, which is indeed extraordinary in the contemporary Chinese architectural media industry.
At present, I clearly realize that architectural journals need to make a decision, whether it should be a magazine or a journal, whether it should mainly disseminate design information, or should it be a journal of science and technology. Internationally, those related to urban, landscape, and geography will be classified as SCI or EI, and journals related to architecture will be classified as A&HCI or SSCI. However, the current evaluation system issued by the Association for Science and Technology does not leave much room for architectural journals and our architectural journals are still on the margins. If you want to enter SCI or EI, you should really be a scientific journal. Therefore, architectural journals should establish their own A&HCI standards if they want to be journals. If they maintain the approach of magazine, the biggest enemy is the dissemination of videos.
Zhang Li, dean and professor of Tsinghua University School of Architecture, deputy chief architect of Tsinghua University Institute of Architectural Design, host of Jianmeng Studio, editor-in-chief of World Architecture magazine
Zhang Tong: Architectural Journals in the Era of New Media
Running an architectural journal has also been on our mind here at Southeast University. The way people receive information is undergoing important and rapid changes, which also brings the young generation's ability to process information far better than before. The positioning of the architecture discipline itself in the journal system is also an important issue that needs to be considered. In the era of new media, paper publications are increasingly inclined to the academic archives that can be stored. Although online methods are time-effective, low-cost, and diverse, the academic ideas and values that have truly precipitated need to be returned to books. The dissemination of academic papers among young students is on a downward trend. The readers of long articles are limited, and extremely academically focused. Therefore, the retrievability of journals and the identification of the evaluation system are also important issues that need to be discussed. A parallel approach of online academic journals could be considered.
Professor Zhang Tong, Dean of School of Architecture, Southeast University
Li Xiangning: Seeking changes in stability, finding the right position, shaping the characters
Nowadays, the industry is indeed facing great challenges, magazines need to find a balance between breadth and spread of purely academic. The core of the architecture discipline is the thinking and presentation of design. In the process of constructing the core values and competitiveness of the architectural discipline, culture is very important. At this stage, universities pay more attention to the development of journals. On the one hand, journals reflect all aspects of work, and on the other hand, journals also provide the channel to communication.
In the subsequent publications, UED will start a period of equal emphasis on design works and academics, hoping that the new UED can find its own unique positioning and identity. The works journal can adhere to the original positioning and exert the influence of the existing brand; the academic journal proposes to plan different themes in each issue on the basis of the column setting, in order to actively respond to the development of the disciplines, and further shape the character of UED
Li Xiangning, Dean, Professor, architecture critic and curator, School of Architecture and Urban Planning, Tongji University
Sun Cheng: Persisting the Mission, inheriting the past and breaking new grounds
From the perspective of the development of academic journals, "Urban Architecture" a collaboration between Harbin Institute of Technology and Heilongjiang Science Press, may be able to provide some lessons. Despite the financial input and human resource, it was forced to suspend due to the change of the president and the concept. Three publications were being produced at the same time. One of them was not supervised strictly and the system was greatly disturbed. ,
UED is a brand, and I am even more familiar with the platform than magazines. For architectural media, the sense of mission is very important. Under the premise of sticking to the core of disciplines, journals have to face the development of architectural science and with the Academic journals and work journals complementing each other, journals need to provide overlapping themes that can meet the requirement of different audiences such as graduate students, undergraduates, and design institutions. In addition, feeling the difficulty of enrolling students, I think that the architectural discipline needs more publicity of architectural culture. I hope that the UED academic journal can be included in the evaluation system of academic achievements of teachers and students in the future.
Professor Sun Cheng, Dean of School of Architecture, Harbin Institute of Technology
Lei Zhendong: The core embodiment of the architects of Tianda University
UED is a record of past media work for more than ten years, and it has also made important contributions to our industry. It is necessary to establish a media alliance to integrate the influence of our journal and enhance the strength of disciplines. The academic level of current academic papers is an important criterion related to the quality and vitality of the journal. At the same time, the awareness of serving the industry is also very important. In the future, the embodiment of the academic contribution of people from Tianjing University should become the core of UED Magazine.
Lei Zhendong, Executive Vice president, Professor, School of Architecture, Xi 'an University of Architecture and Technology
Ji Guohua: Clarify the characteristics of academic journals
UED has very distinctive features which is making themed albums and bench-marking "EL Croquis". Thematic albums share similar characteristics with books and can be planned in advance. Other columns can be added in the future, but this feature should continue to be retained regardless.
For academic journals, how to create its own personality is the biggest challenge. The architect discipline has not established academic standards which is important establish in the future and it is also vital to push our academic journal into the system of the Association for Science and Technology. As for UED’s personality, two most important questions are in need of answers: what it means to submit papers to UED and what can contributors get from the UED platform. With the answers of these two questions, the characteristics of the journal can be gradually derived.
Professor Ji Guohua, Dean of School of Architecture and Urban Planning, Nanjing University
Zhu Ling: 1.0 launches; 2.0 wins; 3.0 breaks and makes
I have very special feelings for UED , because I actually named the magazine. Back in 2003 when I was asked a name, all I wanted to integrate these three disciplines. Today I am very excited and I want to use these words to express my feelings: to promote, to elaborate, to develop, and to discover.
The first is to promote the width, depth and height of the 2.0 version of the magazine. The second is to elaborate the academic influence of Tianjin University. In 2002, Dean Zhang Qi connected UED Magazine with Tianjin University and lead to a strong alliance. Through online and offline activities, Tianjin University pushed the magazine into version 2.0 and expanded the breadth of the magazine. Academic persistence has always been the pursuit of Tianjin University, and it is also how our discipline is recognized and positioned in society. This persistence is not only a matter of the image of a magazine, but also determines the core values and competitiveness of the profession. The third is the development of a new pattern. After being divided into academic journals and work journals, the coverage of the magazine is relatively wide, architects, architectural teachers, and deans can publish excellent designs on UED, and they can also publish academic papers. Editors, at the same time, can also get good materials. If the media alliance can be formed in the future, it will be of great significance to improving the academic environment of universities. The fourth is to discover new opportunities in academic persistence, design thinking and design culture, and subject development positioning.
Zhu Ling, Party Secretary, professor, School of Architecture and Planning, Shenyang Architecture University
Xie Hui: Strengthen academic advantages and the interaction of discipline construction
“The Journal of Western Human Settlements” has also experienced bottlenecks in its name change and development, and has developed rapidly in recent years. In the future, the development of UED must consider the retrieval system of CSCD and CSSCI. Academic journals must fully consider the difficulty of running new work journals including the positioning and the interactive nature of the school’s publications and its own discipline construction.
Professor Xie Hui, deputy dean of The College of Architecture and Urban Planning, Chongqing University
Song Kun, Secretary of the Party Committee of the School of Architecture, Tianjin University, made a concluding speech
The college has reached an agreement with the publishing house, two publications, two styles. The work journal guarantees the coordination and quality of the original UED; the academic journal follows a purely academic route, hoping to enter the retrieval system as soon as possible. I hope to get support from all departments and to establish an architectural media alliance within various universities in terms of mutual development.
