The Ministry of Education recently announced the fourth batch of “Huang Danian-Style Faculty Teams” in Chinese universities. Tianjin University’s Surface Earth System Science Teaching Team, led by Academician Congqiang Liu, has been selected for this prestigious recognition. This marks the fourth consecutive selection of a TJU faculty team, highlighting the university’s consistent excellence in teaching and research.
The team, comprising 32 experts across disciplines such as geology, geography, ecology, and environmental science, has made groundbreaking advancements in Earth system science. Over the past decade, they have created a comprehensive “observation-simulation-decision-making” research framework, established China’s first national-level field observation stations in Tianjin, and developed an interdisciplinary Earth system science model uniquely tailored to national needs.
Their work has yielded significant results in pollution control and climate governance. By innovating methods for analyzing metal isotopes and revealing key element cycles (e.g., carbon, nitrogen, and mercury), the team has provided vital scientific insights for environmental protection policies. Their research has also received international recognition, contributing to global efforts in addressing environmental challenges, with United Nations leaders praising their achievements.
In addition to research, the team is committed to cultivating top-tier talent. They have designed a unique interdisciplinary curriculum that integrates classroom instruction, fieldwork, laboratory training, and simulation. Students benefit from hands-on opportunities at platforms such as the Bohai Coastal Earth Critical Zone Observatory and participate in international research projects. These efforts have produced graduates who excel in fields ranging from environmental governance to global sustainability, with some even interning at the United Nations.
The team’s outreach extends beyond academia. They have established Tianjin’s first Earth system science education base, launched online courses reaching over 1.3 million viewers, and developed environmental restoration guidelines that serve as critical resources for regional sustainability initiatives.
Academician Congqiang Liu emphasized the team’s mission: “We aim to contribute Tianjin University’s wisdom and strength to the construction of a beautiful China.”
From coastal wetlands to the world’s highest peaks, the Surface Earth System Science Teaching Team exemplifies the power of interdisciplinary research and education in addressing global challenges. Their selection as a “Huang Danian-Style Faculty Team” underscores their role as a national model for integrating research, teaching, and service to society.
