Abstract:
This paper offers a re-discussion on the existing problems in studies of the locations of the capitals of the six barbarian states in the early Tang Dynasty and different understandings in the academic world. Through careful analysis of bases offered in On the Matter of Location, it is believed that the inscriptions of the Tang Dynasty unearthed in Yinziliang and other related materials are not enough to prove that the town of Lu in the early Tang Dynasty was located in the old seat of Xingwuying, that the “investigation” of locations of other related towns in the “six barbarian states” based on this understanding is purely groundless and that the inferred conclusion of the locations of the old seat of Shiben and the capital of Lanchi governor’s administration was erroneous. As a matter of fact, evidences are lacking in the capitals of the “six barbarian states” Psychological Study and studies on their locations have offered no deterministic conclusions, further research of which is highly desirable. A dissection of the many mistakes that occurred in the relevant papers shows that the very source lies in improper research approach, fickle atmosphere in academic world. To better the situation, a healthy academic atmosphere should be advocated to carefully and rigorously seek the truthful and practical, neglect fame and interests and advance academic research steadily.
