Abstract:
Shaanxi dialects preserve a series of the vowel u, which differs significantly from Putonghua. Pronunciations of this sort were actually for former readings in the official speech in central China. With the raise of the official speech in northern China represented by Beijing speech, however, these pronunciations have become precious phonological relics of the Chinese language. As a rule, dialectal pronunciations are alive only orally, otherwise they might die without recording. If the people of Shaanxi treasure these phonological relics of their own, they should record these precious pronunciations and hand them down to later generations.
