Abstract:
It was not right of Gu Yanwu to believe that the statues of ancestors did not appear in the temple of imperial family till the Warring Kingdoms times. According to inscriptions on the West Zhou bronze objects, the temple of the imperial family of the West Zhou Dynasty had a separate “portrait hall”. This shows it was at least from West Zhou days that a separate “portrait hall” was built in the temple of West Zhou imperial family to paint the portraits of late kings and lords for contributing sacrifices and lamenting the ancestry. In the late Shang and the early Zhou Dynasty, military maps for war had already been in use. Up till the early Zhou Dynasty, there had been territorial maps of “eastern tribal states” and territorial maps of tribal states for dividing fields.
