Abstract:
Lu Xun’s participation in the League of Leftist Writers marked the shaping of his leftist ideology, but this didn’t mean Lu Xun’s thorough change in his style of life. In fact, he was both allied with and independent of the League and its like. Lu expressed his leftist idea, first of all, in his criticism of liberalist intellectuals headed by Hu Shi, which indicated that he differed seriously from his counterparts both in political demand and in primary personality and that Chinese intellectuals were involved in sharp realistic opposition between the political parties. Again, Lu also showed his leftist mind in his criticism of the Guomingtang authorities. However, his criticism of the authorities was not as revolutionary as the Communists in ideological understanding, so he was as good as a fellow traveler to the Communists even in his late years. It was this identification of Lu Xun that determined his position to the League of Leftist Writers. He became a member of the League but soon quarreled with a few other members. Nevertheless, the two sides managed to maintain the relationship of alliance. As mutual dissatisfactions gathered, the relationship of alliance collapsed at last when the League came to an end.
