Abstract:
It was on December 17, 1936 that Zhou Enlai came to Xi′an with a mission to save the Chinese nation. Since then, Zhou remained here for 104 days, making remarkable contributions to the cause of emancipation of the Chinese nation by helping settle the incident peacefully and deal methodically with the afterproblems. Zhou′s historical contributions were largely as follows: acting as a mediator, adding to Zhang Xueliang and Yang Hucheng′s confidence to peacefully settle the incident; transmitting accurate and timely intelligence to the Central Committee of the CPC to guarantee the committee to work out the guideline for peaceful settlement; offering cooperation advice on various occasions, amplifying the factors of peaceful settlement; giving a full display of his art of negotiation, promoting peaceful settlement; remaining calm in face of hazard, resolutely and daringly stopping the young commanders in Northeast Army launching a riot, and consulting personalities of all walks to consolidate the results of the incident.
