Abstract:
Li Yuan’s experience before taking the office of Taiyuan Liushou has been neglected in previous studies.Through detailed analysis of historical data to restore Li Yuan’s post, track his conduct, and the details of his activities, it is found that the War of Liaodong in the late Sui Dynasty had a hidden relationship with Li Yuan’s personal political career, Taiyuan’s military initiation, and the East Asian policy in the early Tang Dynasty.During the Liaodong War in Daye, Li Yuan, the guard’s lieutenant, supervised the transportation of grain in Huaiyuanzhen to the front line.During his journey through Zhuojun, he had intimate talks with Yuwen Shiji. At that time, dissidents had appeared.Because of his duty, he was keenly aware of the signs of Yang Xuangan’s betrayal of the Sui Dynasty and recited the Emperor in secret during the period of supervision and transportation, and his official career was thus upgraded. Before and after the Taiyuan Uprising in revolt, the War of Liaodong was used to stir up public opinion, and the Liaodong soldiers and the Xiaoguo soldiers were incorporated into the military forces of Li Yuan.Emperor Gaozu of the Tang Dynasty was pragmatic, peaceful and calm in his policy toward Koguryo, in sharp contrast to Emperor Yang of the Sui Dynasty and Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty.
