Abstract:
“The State of Communication Research” is a masterpiece reflecting on communication research, and the series of response articles to this paper also provide a demonstration for how classic texts in communication research are interpreted and responded to. Berelson begins his article by addressing the central controversial issue of “survival” in communication research, this article touched on the central issue of communication research in the 1950s and 1960s,and due to its repeated stataments and omissions, aroused widespread discussion. After the 1970s, the question of the survival of communication research was temporarily over. However, Berelson’s article still gives Morrison and others the impetus and space to develop with its reflective content and its mention of the derivative issues. In the first stage of responding to the classical controversial text, Schramm and others directly responded to the controversial central issue of the text. When this issue was no longer the focus of the academic community, Morrison and other latecomers began to rely on the derivative issues in the text as the source of their responses. Thus, in the pratice of the flow of text meaning, the classical controversial text achieves proliferation and a change of meaning.
