Abstract:
Affected by Kang Youwei, Liang Qichao advocated the worship of Confucius and the protection of Confucianism before political reform, i.e. he devoted himself to the religionization of Confucianism. As a result, his view of Confucianism had a strong color of the Gongyang school. However, his doubt about Kang’s view of Confucianism was shown in his private letters which were not published. After the failure of political reform, Liang Qichao opposed the protection of Confucianism publicly ever since 1902. At that time, Confucianism was already substantially. converted into the academic level from the politicalbelief level in Liang Qichao’s mind. Although the reasons for his change were complex, but the establishment of his belief in Buddhism was an important aspect which could not be ignored. And the reason for his belief in Buddhism was that Buddhism’s function of mass management could be the spiritual support for his pursuit of “newpeople”.
