Abstract:
Based on the fact that Edgar Ellen Poe has had an important influence on Lu Xun’s writing, this paper attempts to make a comprehensive comparison between Lu Xun’s The Good Hell That We Lose and Poe’s Silence-A Fable to illustrate that the former is a conscious adaptation and imitation of the latter. This “rewriting” and “imitation” are embodied in the following aspects: both of them attempt to “innovate” an existing world, and both of them are trying to “innovate” the existing world with the power of “other world” such as “devil” or “hell”. Furthermore, Lu Xun’s drawing lessons from Silence-A Fable reflects his understanding of the concept of “The aesthetics of evil”, which is one of the reasons why Lu Xun’s works have the characteristics of modernism. At the same time, we can see that through the creation of the The Good Hell That We Lose, Lu Xun successfully transformed a world famous literary work into Chinese, and also integrated the development of Chinese literature into the history of world literature.
