Abstract:
Grandparenting is an important form of the diversification of the family structure and family function in the new century. In this paper, we update and make a brief presentation of the literature on grandparenting from the grandparents’ perspective. We address several key areas in our review: (a) the definition of grandparenting and its types; (b) the theoretical motivation of grandparenting; (c) the consequences of grandparents raising their grandchildren and its theoretical explanation, and propose an ananalytical framework for grandparenting from the grandparents’ perspective. We also discuss the directions for future research, that the grandparenting in China needs more attention and more localization research under the social transformation and the changes of family structure.
