Abstract:
The newly released Bao Kai epitaph is an important inscription document that echoes the historical records. Bao Kai, a scribe, entered Chang’an after the end of the Chen Dynasty, has his own biography, which is relatively unsophisticated, in both Sui Shu and Bei Shi. On the contrary, The Bao Kai Epitaph contains massive details, and so to corroborate the history of Liang, Chen and Sui. Especially, due to the fact that Bao Kai is actively engaged in cultural and educational events, the epitaph, thus, could reveal the positive role played by the scholars in the Jiangnan area in the Sui Dynasty, under the background of the Sui applying the so called “Huairou” strategy.
