Abstract:
In the Qing Dynasty, Shaanxi was one of the provinces which started to compile local histories early and was renowned for their quantity and quality. Two provincial gazetteers were compiled during the rein of Emperor Kangxi and Emperor Yongzheng; the compilation process of the local histories of government, state, and county went through the three stages: the early, the middle and the late. In addition, traditional local histories compiled by the government enjoyed systematic completeness and rich variety; the special local histories compiled by individuals were diverse in categories and broad in content. All of these efforts, together with the contributions made by scholars, further improved the quality and promoted the development of Shaanxi local histories.
