Abstract:
Cyprus’s participation in European Union was mainly motivated by a strong sense of belonging to western culture, an active reaction to radical change of international political situation, need of economic development in the era of globalization, strategic choice of state security, and realization of the national unification. On the contrary, Greece as a member of European Union ventured to use the veto to delay the course of Cyprus’s participation in European Union because of its complex for Cyprian Greeks of the same family and origin. However, with its conception of “catalysation”, European Union finally realized its intention of Cyprus’s participation in it. But the peculiarity of Cyprus’s state situation, its special purpose of joining European Union and peculiarity of participating in the union all made European Union have to face a new challenge of solving national conflicts and state split.
