Abstract:
A famous Marxist theorist and translator in the early days of modern China, Zhang Zhongshi got to know and became friends with Mao Dun, an outstanding writing and artistic critic in modern China in the 1930’s, and helped each other in the work for the Life Bookstore for several years. Between the 1930’s and 40’s, they went all the way to Xinjiang together and then to Yan’an. They kept close contact after the founding of the People’s Republic of China, and their friendship went through a test of nearly half a century. The true feelings between the two expressed deeply and vividly the lofty virtue and noble personality of the older generation of intellectuals and contained abundant historical and social implications. However, as the time passed, many records and description of their contacts did not agree with historical facts because of mistakes and losses in their reminiscence or lack of investigation of research materials, which calls for re-investigation and research.
