Abstract:
The socalled “phenomenon of Lu Yao” refers to the distinction between extensive acceptance of Lu Yao’s works and indifference of literary experts, which results from different reading strategies and critical criteria of literary audiences. Generally, the emphasis of deep expression of life and innovation of forms of serious literary works will affect their readability in a general sense. The case with popular literary works, however, is quite different. And Lu’s works are by no means popular. “The phenomenon of Lu Yao” best presents itself in evaluation of his work The Ordinary World for three reasons: First of all, there is a clear dislocation between Lu’s “complex of great work” and the audience’s concern, but this “failure” is covered by the “constant good sale” of his work, which makes the precondition for the phenomenon. Next, what leaves the deepest impression on the audience is the work’s description of struggle of individuals at the bottom of society, but the positive and moral narration of the story causes different reactions among different groups of people. Finally, the artistic form of the novel can by no means satisfy the different appeals of two different groups of readers.
