Abstract:
Whether Leibniz actually influenced the birth of modern logic or intelligently anticipated the later development of logic is an important but disputable issue in studies of the history of modern logic. Two opposite views took shape in arguments about the issue. One view thinks that Leibniz had possessed all principles of the logic algebra system (George Boole and Ernst Schroder), which were even more advanced than these principles. The other view holds that, although Leibniz was the most important logician between Aristotle and Frege and his logic was of great significance, he never acted any important part in the history of logic. Honestly, Leibniz had only indirect influence on the birth of modern logic in the late half of the 19th century. The real value of his logical thoughts lies in the modern reconstruction of the history of logic.
