Task Forces and Coordinating Committees 2010-2014

2010-TF1 - Circum Arctic Lithosphere Evolution (Chair: V. Pease, Sweden)

Covers a multinational and multidisciplinary research program, that investigates circum-Arctic lithosphere evolution by integrating onshore and off-schore geology of the arctic region. Thos allowes to test excisting hypotheses while confidently formulating new ones. Through annual regional as well as specific project meetings scientific results are diddeminated and shared in order to create a unified understanding for the evolution of circum-Arctic lithosphere.

2010-TF2 - Volcanoes and society: environment, health and public outreach (Chair: A. Tibaldi, Italy)

Has a broad approach to the study of volcanic environment that incorporates for main topics:
1) Volcano-tectonic relationships,
2) Lateral collapses in volcanoes,
3) Magma intrusion mechanisms,
4) Volcanic minerals and human health.

These studies have relevance for the scientific comprehension of the link betweeen lithosphere processes and the surface, as well as for the society (natural hazards, health, geothermal energy).

2010-TF3 - Bridging the gap from micro seismicity to large earthquakes (Chair: M. Bohnhoff, Germany)

Aims at investigating earthquakes over a very wide range of magnitudes larger. The studies will address fundamental scientific questions of earthquake physics at multiple scales as well as a number of previously- unaddressed scientific questions related to geologic sequestration of CO2 and exploitation of sustainable hydrocarbon and geothermal energy resources.

2010-TF4 - Continental Collosional Orogens: from Atomic Scales to Mountain Building (Chair: L. Dobrzhinetskaya, USA)

Focuses on interdisciplinary studies of ultrahigh-pressure metamorphic (UHPM) terranes of continental collisional orogens: 1) Mineral reactions, geochemistry, geochronology, rheology and geodynamics of the UHPM terrains; 2) Experimental and numerical modeling of the deep subduction zone processes; 3) Crust-mantle- deep plume interaction during deep subduction.

2010-TF5 - The lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary depth paradox (Chair: U. Achauer, France)

Concentrates on research of the nature and the origin of the lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary (LAB) and it’s different definitions. While a lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary is seen by most disciplines in Earth Sciences, the definition, the depth and its meaning based on a structural, rheological or physico-chemical point of view is highly debated. In this task force researchers across different fields in earth science collaborate to shed light on this still not fully understood interface.

2010-TF6 - Sedimentary Basins (Chairs: L. Matenco, Netherlands and F.H. Nader, France)

Aims at the study of the processes of basins formation and deformation, and coupling between deep mantle and surface processes (vertical motion, source-sink, thermicity). The network is very active, comprising universities, public research institutes and industry companies. Dedicated sessions at the EGU and one yearly international workshop organized each year in a different country allow participants to the task force to meet and report on a regular basis.

2010-TF7 – Geomechanical modelling of geodynamic processes in the lithosphere (Chair: O. Heidbach, Germany)

Organizes a network of scientists in the field of stress and strain observations, analysis, and modelling of the lithosphere. It fosters collaboration amongst experts by conference sessions and dedicated workshops. Scientific goals are (a) to get a deeper quantitative understanding of the geodynamic processes that deform and stress the lithosphere, (b) to contribute with deterministic models to seismic hazard assessment and (c) to develop new integrative model concepts that are capable to investigate feedback processes

2010-TF8 - Lithosphere dynamics: interplays between models and data (Chair: T. Gerya, Switzerland)

Thermo-mechanical geodynamic multi-process modelling is a large, growing, important scientific field that has become an independent branch of Earth Sciences, which is naturally cross-disciplinary and highly integrative. Modeling thus has also become a versatile tool for validation and interpretation of geophysical and  and geological observations. Current challenges are multifold, going from better understanding of physics of the geodynamic and geological processes to bridging the gaps between different spatial and temporal scales of cross-disciplinary observation and elaboration of new geodynamic hypotheses and concepts.

PROPOSAL  EMAIL

2010-TF9 – DISC – Deep Into the Subduction Channel (Chair: P. Agard, France)

Brings together specialists from complementary fields (seismology, petrology, geo chemistry, modelling, …) with the ambition to characterize subduction interface dynamics, both mechanical and chemical, to assess seismic and volcanic hazard, understand lithospheric-scale coupling between plates, vertical movements, or material recycling over planet Earth

PROPOSAL  EMAIL

2010-TF10 – The Unconventionals (Chair: B. Horsfield, Germany)

Refers to the fossil energy systems under focus, and not necessarily the professional outlook nor fashion consciousness of its members. Tight gas, shale gas and coal bed methane all fall in the unconventional category as, being extremely impermeable, it takes special methods to produce hydrocarbons from them. Our quest – To understand the geological systems concerned, and to present a balanced view of exploitation and its consequences. From lithosphere to nanometre scales, and from processes acting over geological or human timeframes: join us now in studying how unconventionals can act as an energy bridge to the future world of renewables.

TOPO-EUROPE - 4D Topography Evolution in Europe: Uplift, Subsidence and Sea Level Rise stands for the geoscience of coupled deep Earth and surface processes, taking Europe and its continental margins as a natuarl laboratory. TOPO-EUROPE pursues an integrated solid Earth science approach, closely linking monitoring ans seismic imaging with reconstruction of the geological record and process modeling.

In the TOPO-EUROPE EUROCORES (European large-scale collaborative research effort) coordinated by the European Science Foundation, researchers from 23 countries are involved funding 60 positions for young researchers.
